  • The right candidate will be intellectually curious, team-oriented, and passionate about software engineering
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science or computer engineering
  • 1+ years of professional (post-graduation) experience developing production software using Rust, C++, Python, Go, Java, C, or C#

Desirable

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience
  • Production-level coding experience in Rust or C++
  • Experience writing software for automation systems, robotics, or similar integrated software-hardware system
  • Interested in working on problems that involve hardware acceleration with GPUs and FPGAs
  • Interested in working on problems that involve big data, machine learning, and AI

What the job involves

  • As a Software Engineer at Freeform, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of cutting-edge projects using the latest and greatest in Rust, Kubernetes, DataFusion, Parquet, Apache Arrow, WASM, and more, in the pursuit of developing a modern software stack to orchestrate Freeform’s fleet of autonomous metal 3D printing factories
  • Our software team develops algorithmically and computationally complex solutions up and down the stack, from control software to big data processing software to graphics/geometry pipelines
  • Design and develop software across Freeform’s software ecosystem including hardware control and automation, signal and data processing, and graphics/geometry pipelines
  • Work with process, electrical, and mechanical engineers to integrate physics-based control algorithms into production software
  • Improve and scale out high-rate data acquisition, storage, and retrieval systems
  • Expand testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment (CI/CD) support throughout the software engineering team
  • Implement elegant and innovate software solutions that enable Freeform to scale its tech stack at a global level

Our take

There is a huge amount of demand for precision metal fabrication in future-focused industries such as rocketry and vehicle manufacturing, but legacy production techniques are too slow and inflexible to meet the requirements of rapidly changing designs in the most innovative firms. Enter Freeform Future, a company which builds metal 3D printing factories to allow manufacturers to swiftly and efficiently go from idea to mass production.

Founded by engineers with extensive experience at SpaceX, Freeform seeks to replace existing metal fabrication works - typified with heavy reliance on manual labour and legacy processes - with 3D printers and automated software technologies. Rather than needing to train a large workforce on production techniques, Freeform will be able to print almost any metal item at production scale on demand, with a turnaround time of days rather than weeks.

Though having only emerged from stealth in 2023, Freeform has some large-scale customers including autonomous trucking firm Embark and rocket part manufacturer, Ursa Major. After raising significant funding in early 2023, the company is moving from prototype to production, scaling up its operations to meet the growing demand for rapidly produced, high-quality metal components.
