Our take

As the world transitions away from polluting fuel sources to renewable energy, we all face a problem with storage. The production of batteries to store electricity generated by solar, tidal and geothermal power is almost as polluting as burning coal, putting the progress of electrification at risk.

Skeleton Technologies, a manufacturer of high-energy and high-density ultracapacitors, exists to provide a solution to this problem. Pioneering the use of curved graphene in battery technology, it has developed batteries for industrial use which can be charged in seconds and which will last for over a million charge cycles. They also have a higher efficiency than existing batteries, which has led to the technology being adopted in over 10,000 installations across the automotive, industrial and renewable energy sectors.

Skeleton has raised an impressive amount of funding, which is being used to develop its state-of-the-art superconductor factory in Germany, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2024. It has also acquired a production facility in Finland which will further increase its manufacturing capacity and drive its R&D efforts. With the uptake of green electric grids only accelerating, Skeleton is in an excellent position to further extend its lead in this space.
