What the job involves

  • As a Lead Engineer joining the API team you can expect to be deeply involved in technical discussions across teams, building out public APIs, and growing the team. You will have input into the team’s mission, goals, and roadmap while collaborating along-side technical product owners, product managers, and product analysts
  • Together, you'll define scope and specifications while refining RFCs to ensure deliverables are met and stability is maintained. You'll also be a key player in helping drive the narrative for the technical evolution of the overall public API space as we invest in both our current and future experiences
  • The API team is responsible for expanding our API surface to enable Klaviyo’s customers and partners to build on top of Klaviyo. Klaviyo already has APIs for storing data and sending communications, primarily for e-commerce applications, but we’re just getting started! We’re looking to expand our API surface to provide external developers the tools they need to solve core use cases
  • This role within Klaviyo has resulted from growth and there are ample opportunities to advance given the scope of this position and the team’s central role in Klaviyo’s product
  • Meet and work with a number of engineers across the company to expand our API surface across Klaviyo’s various product areas

  • Build upon and enhance Klaviyo’s API framework foundation. This includes features such as framework support for pagination, improvements to versioning, observability, documentation, etc
  • Promote sound API design patterns & standards that result in best in class Developer Experience for customers that use our APIs
  • Ensure that Klaviyo data is exposed to 3rd party callers only through Public APIs
  • Partner with our Go-to-Market team (solution architects, support engineers, developer advocates) to better understand issues developers are facing with our APIs to design and build solutions
  • Be responsible for technical quality, teach others technical expertise and help them develop skills they need to improve within the organization

Our take

Klaviyo is a marketing firm helping growth-focused eCommerce brands drive more sales with super-targeted, highly relevant email, Facebook and Instagram marketing campaigns. From personalised newsletters to automated emails when customers abandon their shopping carts, the marketing automation platform makes it easy for businesses to capture, store, analyze, and predictively use their own data to drive measurable, high-value outcomes.

Klaviyo's CEO, Bialecki, believes that the main problem with e-mail marketing today is that there is a divide between two kinds of tools: analytics tools that help you understand what people are doing on a website, such as what products they are considering, and messaging tools that send them a marketing e-mail. Operating primarily within the retail and eCommerce industry, Klaviyo aims to solve this by offering a tool that brings together analytics and messaging. This allows companies to bring all of their first-party data into a single platform to get a deep understanding of their customers and then activate that data to deliver highly-targeted, personalised communications through email and SMS. In the process, Klaviyo's customers get a deep understanding of their consumers.

Klaviyo is a fast-growing company mainly due to its business model - the firm offers a concrete ROI for Klaviyo’s clients if the software persuades customers to make purchases by treating different types of customers differently. An IPO in 2023 has led to Klaviyo's release of Klaviyo AI, which empowers businesses to unlock revenue-driving opportunities and deliver exceptional customer experiences across channels. Still in its early days of public listing, it will be interesting to see how Klaviyo fares in the years to come.
