Company mission

Our mission is to build the place where small businesses get the funding they need to win. We have a huge impact on the businesses that borrow through our platform and the overall economy (last year £6.9bn of GDP generated). With over a decade leading the industry with our award winning core loans platform we are now solving more SME finance challenges as we transform into a multi-product lending platform.

Role

Who you are

  • Be experienced in working with distributed systems
  • Have a proven ability to lead and influence architectural decisions
  • Have experience with Ruby or a commitment to learn and work with it (many of our Engineers did not have prior professional experience with Ruby)
  • Have a positive, can-do attitude. You are humble enough to admit your mistakes but also resolute enough to take the action necessary to fix them
  • Willing to champion big changes in the current way we operate (e.g. migration from Marathon/Mesos to Kubernetes)
  • Have a proven ability in balancing commercial vs technical considerations
  • Have excellent communication abilities allowing you to coach, mentor and support other members of the team
  • Have a positive, can-do attitude. You are humble enough to admit your mistakes but also resolute enough to take the action necessary to fix them
  • Have experience working in Agile environments or an openness to learn and work with them

What the job involves

  • We run a separate stack from the UK side of Funding Circle, but benefit from shared support from our InfoSec, Platform & SRE teams
  • We work UK hours but collaborate with the business teams in Denver & San Francisco
  • Deliver predictive financial models into production
  • Streamline the application process for users of our website and API
  • Identify and improve our codebase towards further “architectural agility”
  • Identify & quantify performance bottlenecks and take action to resolve them
  • Automate loan decision processes
  • Support the move from a single product (term loan) to a multi-product offering

Otta's take

Sam Franklin headshot

Sam Franklin

CEO of Otta

Funding Circle launched in 2010 and it was the perfect time in the market. After the financial crisis in 2008, financial institutions were hesitant to lend money. Loans to SMEs were at record lows.

This meant that Funding Circle's innovative platform - connecting investors and businesses directly - had immediate product-market fit and growth. Funding Circle remains incredibly focused on small businesses, and this set it apart from other lending platforms. The business has since expanded to the USA.

The company completed its IPO in September 2018 in a challenging economic environment in Europe and the USA. More recently, however, trading in the group’s core UK market has been helped by its participation in the government’s Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme – the company says it has been responsible for a quarter of CBILS loans by volume since it was accredited to join the scheme in April 2020.
