Company mission

Aiven aims to be the world’s leading cloud data platform – by making developer’s lives better.

Role

Who you are

  • We are looking for a production-minded engineering manager who has a keen interest in the business and user behavior, is proactive with planning, priorisation and tradeoffs, and wants to understand the “Why?” behind all things
  • As a production-minded engineering manager, you communicate well with engineers and non-engineers alike, and are interested in how other functions work
  • Our engineering managers have a hands-on programming background, and we expect them to have a meaningful say in technical conversations
  • You’ll probably have at least five years’ hands-on programming experience building, maintaining and operating distributed systems, and at least two years’ experience of people management
  • But more than the years, we care about what you have been doing
  • We want to hear about the products you shipped, how they were built, what was the impact, and what you learned while doing that
  • The team interacts with a wide range of products and technologies, but infrastructure and distributed systems is at its core
  • Our primary technologies are Python and Go services backed by PostgreSQL
  • We don’t expect you to tackle everything on the list from the get-go, but having prior experience is beneficial for sure
  • Proven track record of leading teams in successful software product deliveries
  • Communicate cross-functionally and have a strong product sense
  • Experience in recruiting engineering talent
  • Experience in agile software development
  • Comfortable leading initiatives and presenting to groups
  • Fluent communication skills in English, written and verbal
  • Experience building full-stack web applications end-to-end, including modern single-page apps
  • Experience, preferably hands-on, in public cloud infrastructure and networking (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure)
  • Experience designing public RESTful APIs
  • Relational database knowledge (PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.)
  • Streaming service knowledge (Kafka, etc.)
  • Experience working with CI/CD tools (BuildKite, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, etc.)

What the job involves

  • Right now, we’re looking for a Engineering Manager (Infrastructure Platform) to join our team who shares our passion for forward-thinking and innovative approaches
  • We’re hiring a engineering manager to lead our Infrastructure Platform’s product engineering team
  • The Infrastructure Platform enables our users to explore and control their containerized applications and data services through our high-available APIs
  • The Infrastructure Platform is often the customer’s first touchpoint with Aiven’s data platform, and plays a big part in our product-led growth strategy
  • We want it to be an intuitive and seamless experience, while providing advanced features to support experienced users’ needs
  • The team works on all aspects of the Infrastructure Platform across our whole tech stack, but is specifically focused on bringing new product features to life in close collaboration with other teams, while also keeping the technical foundation and delivery of the Infrastructure Platform in tip-top shape
  • The distributed team consists of fantastic engineers concentrated around our Production Engineering hub in Toronto
  • Plan the engineering roadmap together with product management and the team
  • Manage the team’s backlog
  • Be accountable for the team’s output and performance
  • Coach team members as they advance in their careers
  • Grow the team by hiring excellent engineering talent
  • Foster a psychologically safe, high-trust environment where curiosity, healthy debate, and exchange of ideas thrive
  • Facilitate team meetings like planning and retrospectives

Application process

  • Once applying you should hear from our Talent Experience team within 5 days regarding the status of your application. If you are selected to move forward you can generally expect 4 stages with us
  • 30-45 minute call with one of our Talent Partners
  • 45 minute Depth of Expertise Interview with the hiring manager
  • Skills interview and or presentation for 1 hour with the wider team
  • Company values interview for 1 hour

Our take

Cloud computing presents massive implications for the way businesses use data, with cloud-based databases ensuring high uptime, frictionless scalability, and simple software integrations. However, achieving this requires setting up cloud databases in the first place, an obstacle that can be incredibly tough and prevent companies from migrating to cloud-based data infrastructure altogether.

Aiven provides an open-source cloud data management platform, allowing users to easily set up cloud databases, access cloud tool integrations, automate data infrastructural management, and control data security within a single platform. The platform integrates directly into open source data services such as Apache Kafka and OpenSearch, supports multi-cloud deployments, and includes built-in compliance, encryption, and end-to-end security features. In 2023, it added AI-powered data optimisation capabilities via its integration of EverSQL's engine into its products.

Whilst various companies are tackling the difficulties of setting up cloud databases, Aiven has smartly taken more of an all-in-one approach, tackling everything from the building and managing of databases to software integrations, multi-cloud hosting, and security. The company claims that its cloud data solutions can massively reduce the amount of time, money, and resources that businesses must spend to migrate to cloud-based data infrastructure.
