  • Proven Leadership: At least 5 years in a leadership role within software development or embedded systems, including 3 years directly managing a software development team through all stages of the software lifecycle
  • Automotive: understanding of automotive electronics, communication protocols (e.g., CAN, FlexRay, Automotive Ethernet), and E/E architectures
  • OEM Integration & Standards: Experience in negotiating and defining integration boundaries with automotive OEMs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and OEM-specific requirements and regulations (e.g. ISO 26262, AUTOSAR, MISRA)
  • Communication: Ability to translate product requirements into detailed technical specifications, ensuring alignment between technical and business objectives
  • Strategic and Analytical Thinking: Ability to conceive and implement strategic technology projects aligned with both immediate and long-term business objectives
  • Leadership and Collaboration Skills: Excellent leadership qualities, capable of leading cross-functional teams and projects. Strong ability to collaborate across divisions and effectively engage stakeholders
  • Mentorship and Cultural Development: Provide mentorship to engineers, guiding them in their professional growth. Actively lead forums such as design reviews and architecture planning to promote a culture of engineering excellence and compliance

Desirable

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience working as a Tier 1 supplier in the automotive industry
  • Knowledge of generative AI, LLMs, and transformer architectures
  • Familiarity with end-to-end approaches in autonomous driving
  • Experience with automotive OEM integration projects

What the job involves

  • We are looking for an experienced and visionary Lead Solution Architect to take a key role in shaping and managing the integration of our autonomous driving technology with automotive OEMs
  • In this role, you will have the opportunity to define and drive the product roadmap for cutting-edge automotive solutions, while building and leading a new department
  • The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between product strategy and technical implementation, ensuring our solutions integrate seamlessly with a variety of vehicle systems, helping to shape the future of autonomous mobility
  • Define and manage the technical architecture of our autonomous driving solution, focusing on the interface between our software and vehicle systems
  • Collaborate with Product Management to translate product requirements into actionable technical specifications
  • Negotiate and define integration boundaries with automotive OEMs, ensuring our product meets industry standards and OEM-specific requirements
  • Work closely with Software Architects to ensure the technical feasibility and optimal implementation of product features
  • Coordinate with Validation Engineers to define testing requirements and ensure the final product meets all specifications
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including interface specifications, integration guides, and architectural diagrams
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in autonomous driving and vehicle integration
  • Participate in client meetings and technical discussions to represent our product's capabilities and integration potential
  • Critically assess the current technical landscape for SDVs, specially in the area of OS and middleware and be open to challenge it with innovative (for the automotive industry) concepts

Our take

Wayve is developing artificial intelligence (AI) that teaches cars to drive autonomously using reinforcement learning, simulation, and computer vision. Wayve’s core premise is that the big breakthrough in self-driving cars will come from better AI brains rather than more sensors or “hand-coded” rules which it believes are highly restrictive and not at all scalable.

The company said that it trains its autonomous driving system using simulated environments and then transfers that knowledge into the real world, where it emulates how humans adapt to conditions in real time. It ultimately relies on end-to-end deep learning AI rather than hard-engineered AI. This is one of the world's hardest problems to solve, but Wayve has made an exciting start and is taking a very different approach to competitors like Uber and Waymo, who are relying more on sensors.

Following a few years of innovative breakthroughs, Wayve now has backing from high-profile investors such as Microsoft and angels, including Uber's chief scientist Zoubin Ghahramani and Pieter Abbeel, a UC Berkeley robotics professor and pioneer of deep reinforcement learning. The company's strategic partnerships with outfits like Asda and Ocado to test-run autonomous deliveries, as well as publicity through the Minister is a show of confidence in the future of Wayve's solution to autonomous driving.
