Company mission

To create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow.

Role

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Strong EE fundamentals
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience designing PCBs for low power and size constrained applications
  • Experience shipping devices through mass manufacturing
  • Extensive experience with all phases of PCB design (part selection, schematic, constraints, library management, board layout)
  • Fluency with PCB CAD tools (Altium, Eagle, KiCad, Allegro)
  • Experience with sensors, power management, and signal/power integrity
  • Experience with wireless systems (BLE, WIFI, Zigbee)
  • Experience building and bringing-up MCUs or FPGA
  • Comfortable with common communication protocols (SPI, UART, I2C, etc.)
  • Comfortable with lab equipment (oscilloscope, VNA, etc)
  • Basic C and Python programming skills

Desirable

  • 5+ years of experience
  • Experience with firmware development for embedded systems (C/C++)
  • Proficiency with ME CAD tools (Solidworks, AutoCAD)
  • Experience with FEM/FDTD simulation tools and antenna designs/testing
  • Experience with analog circuit design
  • Experience in the design and testing of wearable electronic devices (watches, fitness trackers, wireless headphones, etc)
  • Prior work or experience pushing hardware systems through FCC/FDA approval process

What the job involves

  • Join the implant embedded systems team and be part of an elite team of engineers working on high-performance, safety-critical devices for the next-generation brain-computer interfaces
  • We are looking for an experienced, hands-on electrical engineer for implant electronics board design, integration with our custom chips, testing, and quality control
  • You will own advanced projects, not only working on incremental changes, and be an integral member of a small, fast-moving team
  • You will be working on all phases of board design (part selection, schematic design, layout, and bring-up) as well as work closely with chip designers, firmware engineers, mechanical engineers, and microfabrication experts for system integration

Our take

Neuralink is a company developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers. Its primary objective is to help people with paralysis to gain more autonomy in their everyday lives, with the possibility that its tech will be used to enhance the abilities of the wider community further in the future.

For many, brain implants such as those being developed by Neuralink belong firmly in the realm of sci-fi. That said, the idea of interfacing machines with the brain for medical purposes has existed for some time, with examples including cochlear implants and Deep Brain Stimulation. Having secured FDA approval, Neuralink is now able to move ahead with human trials - a significant step in its ambitious proposals becoming a reality.

The approval seems to have made the company more appealing to investors, and Neuralink has since raised considerable funds towards advancing its research. It should be noted, though, that despite this positive attention, much discussion surrounding the company regards its animal testing practices which - some sources say - may have resulted in more animal deaths than necessary as staff were pressured to push for the FDA approval. Despite the ethical debate surrounding Neuralink's practices, 2024 saw Elon Musk, the CEO of Neuralink, announce that the first Brain-computer-interface (BCI) patient can successfully move a mouse around a computer screen just by thinking.
