Company mission

Entertainment, like friendship, is a fundamental human need; it changes how we feel and gives us common ground. Netflix is better entertainment at lower cost and greater scale than the world has ever seen. They want to entertain everyone, and make the world smile.

Role

Who you are

  • You should be passionate about delivering quality at scale and reimagining how designers and engineers work together to build scalable experiences
  • 5+ years of experience contributing to a Design System in Figma
  • Experience designing within Consumer products for Android, iOS, Web or TV platform
  • You foster an open, inclusive environment for others to provide feedback, share ideas, and crack challenging problems together
  • You understand the basics of technical constraints and how to design iterative solutions to effectively partner with engineering teams
  • You are passionate about design craft and attention to detail
  • You are known as a strong communicator who articulates design rationale based on qualitative and quantitative data

Desirable

  • Given the nature of design system work, system designers usually bring a unique skill set and superpower to the team. Have you worked on a motion system? Maybe you have an engineering background or perhaps you led accessibility efforts for a previous system? We are always looking for unique skill sets to augment the rest of the team and believe in the power of interdisciplinary thinking. We’d love to know your superpower!

What the job involves

  • This role sits on the Design Foundations team, which is part of Core XD, a horizontal organization whose mission is to enable quality and innovation at scale
  • The Design Foundations team at Netflix is searching for a systems designer to help shape the next phase of Hawkins, our design system
  • As a System Designer on the team, you will collaborate closely with product design, engineering, content design, and design ops organizations
  • Maintain and improve cross-platform component design libraries in Figma, based on user feedback
  • Collaborate directly with cross-platform engineering teams to build components based on robust design specs
  • Collaborate early and often with feature teams to solve real pain points and drive adoption of the system
  • Create detailed design documentation to support design and engineering usage of Hawkins
  • Build for accessibility upfront in the creative design process, and advocate for inclusive experiences across platforms
  • Drive thoughtful engagement with our design community by participating in our operational programs like Office Hours

Our take

Netflix was started when one of the co-founders had received a $40 late fee after failing to return a film on time. Now, Netflix is one of the fastest growing technology companies, reinventing the entertainment space by providing high quality content for low fees.

This is becoming an increasingly competitive space, with deep-pocketed rivals including Amazon, Disney, Apple and AT&T. They are all spending big on content and pricing cheaply in a battle to win subscribers.

After a dwindling number of subscribers due to tough competition in 2022, Netflix is focused and committed to improving its core service which is its TV, movies and now games going forward. Post-IPO funding of $183 million from Winslow Capital at the end of 2023 followed the previous year's dumping of shares by the same company after Netflix's first loss of subscribers. This capital indicates a shifting perspective on Netflix's outlook, which saw a year-end subscriber boost.
