Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of related experience; or 3+ years and a Master's degree; or equivalent work experience
- Experience designing, developing and managing scalable ETL pipelines
- High proficiency in SQL (Snowflake, MySQL or similar)
- Proficiency in Python
- Proficiency in data visualization tools like Looker or Tableau
- Familiarity with schema design, query optimization, and data pipeline maintenance along with Airflow, Prefect, and Github
- Experience setting up data quality and data lineage monitoring, and systems health monitoring is a big plus
- Experience with financial crimes compliance systems, technologies and processes, especially AML transaction monitoring typologies and rules is a big plus
- An interest in advancing Cash App's vision of building products for economic empowerment
What the job involves
- The Compliance Engineering & Technology (CET) team at Block finds and reports financial crimes activity across Cash App, Square, and Afterpay
- We work globally with partners in business, engineering, counsel, and product to provide a safe user experience for our customers while minimizing and potentially eliminating bad activity on our platform
- As a Business Intelligence Engineer you will handle everything from data architecture and modeling to data pipeline tooling and dashboarding
- You will enable other compliance teams to make impactful decisions by laying the foundation for analyzing our large and unique datasets that span across multiple products
- You will be fully remote and report to the CET Business Intelligence Data Engineering Lead
- Work with engineering and product teams to design and build financial crimes ETL pipelines to unblock new product launches and improve existing systems
- Design and operationalize monitoring queues that detect suspicious activity across different Cash App products
- Create brand new and improve existing data models on top of Cash App data including but not limited to eventing, customer level, and process level data
- Build dashboards to monitor health of the team’s infrastructure such as systems monitoring, data quality and lineage monitoring etc
- Work with non-technical partners and product teams to understand their needs, translate business requirements into applicable data requirements, and come up with automated end-to-end solutions
- Standardize business and product metric definitions in curated and optimized datasets, and develop data dictionaries and other related documentation

Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.

Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.

The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
