Company mission

To shape both the future of work, and the future of productivity tools.

Role

Who you are

  • Open mindset: You are receptive to new ideas, concepts, and practices, with a strong interest in continuous learning and development
  • This involves being open to constructive feedback, being adaptable to changes in the work environment, and persistently seeking growth and development opportunities
  • Startup mentality: You are comfortable navigating the fast moving, unstructured nature of a hyper-growth startup
  • You are self-motivated to add value and bias towards action
  • You understand the importance of setting the engineering quality bar for the long term success of our business, but are able to make difficult prioritizations
  • Pragmatic and business-oriented: You care about business impact and prioritize projects accordingly
  • You don't just go after cool stuff—you understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line
  • To you, technologies and programming languages are about tradeoffs
  • You may be opinionated, but you're not ideological and can learn new technologies as you go

Desirable

  • You have experience in scaling a hyper-growth startup
  • You have experience working with distributed systems
  • You have expertise in architecting data models for scalability and performance
  • You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work
  • You have interests outside of technology, such as in art, history, or social sciences

What the job involves

  • You'll contribute to scaling Notion as a top-tier service for our millions of users and teams who depend on us daily
  • You'll have the opportunity to build a brand new cell-based architecture in collaboration with senior architects and engineers on the team
  • You'll have the opportunity to develop your expertise in one or more domains within Infrastructure, which includes Services, Storage, Cache, Queue, Realtime Collaboration, Control Plane, among others
  • You'll be responsible for debugging systems in production, appreciating the skill and challenge of replacing production components with minimal user disruption. You're able to be on an on-call rotation
  • You'll have the opportunity to scale production software to support rapid growth, monitoring production systems, and managing resource constraints

Otta's take

CTO of Otta

Managing busy workflows using fragmented systems can be a headache for both individuals and businesses. Notion aims to combat this problem by enabling users to work from one central hub, customizing their workflows to suit their exact needs. This includes managing files, scheduling tasks, saving documents, writing to-do-lists, and setting reminders.

The company counts enterprise companies such as McDonald’s, The Wall Street Journal, Verizon, Samsung, and IBM as its customers. In spite of economic uncertainty, Notion reached a $2 billion valuation in 2020, helped by record signups as more people were forced to work from home. Its value has since risen to over 5 times this value, an impressive reflection of its success.

The company has made a number of strategic acquisitions that, coupled with its enormous market value and enviable customer list, have Notion well-placed to continue dominating the market. That being said, the launch of Microsoft-built competitor Loop at the end of 2023 will put Notion's market dominance to the test.
