Company mission

Reliable Robotics' mission is to help create a world in which aircrafts fly themselves, using artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, and automation.

Role

Who you are

  • Junior or Senior standing in 4-year college degree program in mechanical engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals - statics, dynamics, and materials
  • Experience in NX or similar CAD software and Simcenter or similar FEA packages
  • A demonstrated passion for mechanical or electromechanical hardware

Desirable

  • Hands on application of mechanical systems through classes, clubs, or hobbies
  • Experience applying both hand calcs and FEM to predict failure modes
  • Ability to design, build, and operate mechanical test stands
  • Excellent measurement, technical writing, and data analysis skills
  • Eagerness to both teach and learn

What the job involves

  • As a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Reliable Robotics, you will be a part of the Mechanical Engineering team, reporting to the mechanical engineering manager
  • This is a small team of highly motivated people designing, testing, and flying advanced mechanical systems
  • We enjoy cradle-to-grave hardware ownership and hands-on build, test, and integration of our designs
  • In your role as a mechanical intern, you will own at least one project from early conceptual design to installation on the development aircraft
  • Our intention is for mechanical interns to experience the full hardware development cycle, and all intern projects are high priority and value-added efforts contributing to our automated flight systems

Our take

The landscape of vehicles is rapidly changing with automation and robotics seeing application in cars, trucks, and even spacecraft. Whilst airplanes have seen semi-automatic pilot modes for decades, a human pilot is still required to finetune automated processes and to conduct routine tasks such as taxiing and landings.

Reliable Robotics provides self-driving technology to allow small cargo planes to make routine cargo deliveries without a pilot. Founded by former SpaceX and Tesla engineers, the company claims that all cognitive abilities required to fly a plane can be automated through machine learning and remote pilot assistance. This will allow cargo planes to utilize the thousands of smaller airports and rural landing strips that are currently underused due to the difficulty of manual landing in areas with poor infrastructure.

The company has attracted significant funding over the years, which is being used in research and development and improving the capabilities of its autonomous aircraft systems. Going forward the company plans to outfit larger cargo planes with its technology, and eventually trial autonomous passenger flights.
