Who you are

  • Bachelor’s Degree, ideally in a technical field, but we understand great engineers come from all sorts of different backgrounds and also consider relevant work experience
  • 5-7+ years programming experience, with a track record of leading complex projects and systems
  • Expertise in our core stack: Kotlin / Spring / PostgreSQL / AWS
  • Proficiency in frameworks and tools like Spring, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform
  • Experience with cloud platforms (eg:, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
  • Strong understanding of relational databases, ORMs and REST APIs
  • Strong sense of responsibility; driving a project from inception to completion
  • Affinity for solving problems and shipping impactful features, not polishing perfect code or architecture
  • Experience working in a collaborative coding environment, refining designs together, working through code reviews and managing pull requests
  • Deep experience with Agile methodologies as well as software testing: unit, integration, and end-to-end

  • Interest in personal finance
  • Experience managing your own investments or experience taking out loans
  • Experience scaling highly available, mission critical systems
  • Full-stack experience, either toward systems (kafka, docker, posix), databases (postgres), or front-end (javascript/typescript, react)

  • We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Member Benefits engineering team at SoFi, where we are designing for the future of personal finance
  • We are looking to help our Members find their path to financial independence by providing them with the tools, resources, and guidance they need to get there
  • We want to be part of the customers financial journey by providing them timely insights, tailored to their needs, that will establish and build trust
  • Building this will involve taking a thoughtful and personalized approach towards every user’s financial needs
  • The ideal candidate is collaborative, product-minded, and pragmatic, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for the quality of both the code and finished product

  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code, demonstrating best practices with clear and exemplary usage of the team’s stack (Kotlin / Spring / PostgreSQL)

  • Collaborates across functions to tackle ambiguous, system-wide problems, with a primary focus on the Member Benefits team
  • Facilitates the team’s design process to produce high-quality technical design documents, ensures critical decisions are well-reasoned and aligned, and mentors others in technical design best practices
  • Prioritizes and drives the team’s technical priorities, both short term and mid term
  • Works with the product and engineering teams in ensuring better understanding of cross-team dependencies and parallelizing execution across teams
  • Recognizes critical team decisions, can reason about alternative solutions, articulate technical tradeoffs, and drive appropriate review and alignment with the broader SoFi engineering community
  • Participates in group-level strategic planning and resource prioritization, representing the team’s perspective; aligns team projects with group direction

SoFi started by offering ways for students to secure better financial terms on their loans, and now offers a huge range of personal finance products, including bank accounts, loans, mortgages, investment advice, and investment opportunities. Many customers find they have to go to multiple financial service providers to meet all their finance needs, but SoFi overcomes this issue by putting it all in one place.

Its goal, to cover all the financial bases, sets them apart from many of the traditional banks and even some of their digital competitors, such as Avant, which has chosen to focus on providing credit alternatives. Although it is operating in a competitive market with a lot of big players such as Monzo, Revolut, and Starling, the company has managed to raise huge amounts of funding to support its rapid expansion.

SoFi has focussed on global expansion, moving outside the US, and has made a series of acquisitions to support this - including a Hong Kong-based investment app called 8 Securities. After going public on the New York Stock Exchange via a SPAC merger in June 2021, the company has continued to evolve and release more mission-oriented services into its roster, and strengthened its lending capabilities through a $350 million post-IPO loan. To date, the company has sold over $15 billion in personal loan collateral and continues to strengthen its offering.
