Who you are

  • If you’re an experienced, customer-obsessed Head of Copy, who wants to work on a brand that leads with its unique tone of voice, this role is for you
  • Player-coach mentality with a track record of leadership coupled with the ability to jump in and write where needed
  • You’re proactive.You don’t wait for others to figure things out, you jump in, ask questions and move projects forward
  • You’re a systems thinker and bias towards action, taking complex challenges and testing quickly
  • Pre-series C experience. You’re an entrepreneurial spirit, with a test and learn attitude
  • Extensive experience establishing processes for high-quality execution
  • A positive force, bringing new concepts to life in an app-first, online environment
  • 4+ years of experience managing a team of creatives whilst working in a senior copy role in the creative field, ideally in a high-growth startup or scale-up
  • Strong portfolio showcasing strategic/conceptual thinking and storytelling
  • You’ve got a great sense of humor on and off the page

What the job involves

  • Cleo’s voice is embedded across everything we think, make, and do. Behind it, is a team with ambitions to change the world’s relationship with money
  • With a human and structured approach, this person will lead our writers in further defining Cleo's voice and creating breakthrough communications in a traditionally boring – and crowded – fintech space
  • Co-lead the internal Creative Studio in partnership with design leads, helping the team deliver performative and compelling communications support
  • Help master (and define) Cleo’s brand voice. As one of our core differentiators, this is a business-critical part of the job
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to a team of copywriters, fostering open creative expression and ensuring high-quality copy across our marketing channels
  • Oversee the creative copy process, ensuring work aligns with business objectives (OKRs)
  • Uphold the highest standards of creative quality in copy and brand messaging
  • Lead creative brainstorming sessions with the wider team that delivers original and high-impact creative
  • Demonstrate an open leadership style that’s both supportive and inspirational, helping the team deliver high-quality work and continue to find ways to improve their outputs and the copy process
  • Demonstrate strong proofreading and editing skills across business and consumer audiences

Our take

People are increasingly not satisfied with the products being offered by traditional banks, which have proven slow to react to the needs of younger consumers who expect more from their everyday experiences.

Cleo was one of the first companies to make great use of chatbots that sit within Facebook's messenger app. This chatbot-first approach and Gen Z user base have given it strong virality. It now has millions of registered users, 99% of which are based in the US, leading to a decision to take a year break from the UK market to focus on its US Gen Z customers.

Its Series C funding will help the company to double down in the US, where it will make a significant increase in employee headcount, and enable Cleo to maintain and expand its service during an economic downturn.

Financial advice delivered via bots is a crowded space, so Cleo benefits from having a strong brand presence. It has gone for very bold, fun, Gen Z-focused messaging which helps it to stand out from competitors such as Emma, Plum, and Chip.
