Role

Who you are

  • 7+ years of experience in program or project management, with a focus on external client engagements, enterprise technology/SaaS experience is a bonus
  • Hands-on experience owning complex, x-functional project planning and execution; facilitation, organization, and stakeholder management
  • Strong business-minded partnerships interest and acumen: understands partner lifecycle and investments required to enable partner success
  • Excited by the combination of working deeply with individual partners and building for scale
  • Strong sense of ownership and resilience; adaptive to changing priorities and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills (both written and verbal), with the ability to collaborate effectively across various departments and global teams
  • A strategic mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and scalability
  • Thrives/finds the opportunity in ambiguity and has a passion for building and testing new processes

What the job involves

  • As Gusto Embedded Payroll has continued to expand, our portfolio has grown to include increasingly custom and complex programs with Partners each serving thousands or hundreds of thousands of employers
  • We recognize the need for additional planning, facilitation, and coordination that brings together GEP workstreams, external Partner stakeholders and teams, and x-Gusto teams
  • Program Management within Gusto Embedded Payroll is a relatively new function, and you will be helping build out this new discipline. This role has two key areas of focus:
  • Leading cross-functional initiatives while we build out implementations with our Partners
  • Focusing internally within the team to build scalable systems and tooling to help fuel our rapid growth goals
  • This will be a dynamic role, working across multiple disciplines both internally and externally
  • You’ll work together with our teams (who are eager for the support!) to iterate and build those programs as we grow
  • Because we’re still in our early days with this function, you’ll have an ability to rapidly develop and deploy best practices to help scale (1->10 phase and beyond). You’ll be directly empowered by our Head of Program Management
  • Gusto Embedded Payroll (“GEP”) allows us to bring our people platform to thousands more businesses than those we serve directly and will play a key role in Gusto’s growth
  • Project Planning and Expertise: Planning for and executing on intricate deliveries of custom, multi-workstream and -phase programs for GEP’s highest impact partner implementations
  • GEP Interface: Connecting technical details, growth initiatives, and support needs, making sure all GEP teams work together in service of GEP mission and goals
  • Cross-functional Facilitation: Coordinating across x-GEP and x-Gusto initiatives to include points of view, track progress, connect dependencies, and discover risks early to prevent delays to partner launch and growth
  • Process and Documentation: Standardizing delivery process and playbook for complex partner deliveries, arming GEP with the tools to maximize future partner opportunities

Our take

For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy which many SMB owners don’t have. The three co-founders of Gusto – all coming from small business backgrounds – collaborated on a Fintech company that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.

The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 200,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. In 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and its position in a competitive market, including two other fintech startups, Ardius and Symmetry.

Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. Although Gusto has found itself impacted by the macroeconomic situation, through the significant effect it has had on its clientele, the company still appears positive for the future after raising funds in 2023 that will see it reach key profitability benchmarks. It continues to consolidate its platform, for example by integrating with OpenComp to grant its users access to the company's Compensation Intelligence Platform.
