Company mission

Amazon aims to be Earth’s most customer centric company. Their mission is to continually raise the bar of the customer experience by using the internet and technology to help consumers find, discover and buy anything, and empower businesses and content creators to maximise their success.

Role

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field
  • Extensive experience with Windows Server
  • Experience years of experience with virtualization (Hyper-V, VMware, etc)
  • Extensive experience with relational databases (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Extensive scripting experience (Power-Shell most preferred, Python useful, Bash, Perl, Ruby, etc also acceptable)

Desirable

  • Extensive experience with Networking, or exposure to basic concepts and trouble-shooting connectivity issues
  • Extensive experience with AWS Services, Physical Access Control system (Lenel, RedCloud, etc)
  • Working knowledge with Linux systems administration and/or related development experience using, or some exposure to Amazon Web Services (S3, EC2, VPC, etc)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and identify the root cause of issues
  • Proven experience creating documentation for production systems and experience in 24/7 online environment

What the job involves

  • Amazon Security is looking for a driven professional to join its systems engineering team to manage the operation of our physical access control system (PACS), as well as help us automate a sustainable and robust architecture for future growth
  • As a system engineer, you will be responsible for the overall health of our service and provide excellent customer service to our partners
  • You will create availability and health metrics, monitor performance, perform regular system maintenance, and architect innovative solutions for running a PACS in a large distributed environment
  • You will automate routine tasks enabling the team to be quick and agile
  • You'll be one of our experts in system automation
  • You’ll work closely with internal customers to understand their operational challenges and provide helpful solutions
  • You should enjoy digging deep to find answers, sometimes this will require reverse engineering existing solutions, a situation you thrive in
  • This position will require participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation
  • We primarily support Windows server, using HyperV for virtualization, but in recent months our scope of infrastructure expertise has broadened from bare metal hosts/VMs to solutions that run on Native AWS Services
  • Our team has a core function of ensuring Lenel application and system stability, often diving deep to trouble-shoot common issues, as well as anomalies, working closely with our partners
  • On a day-to-day basis, we strive for engineering and operational excellence through patching, and other security compliance activities, along with deploying scripting/automation solutions to build servers and monitor their performance
  • In the coming months, we are looking to reduce tech debt by replacing legacy servers and upgrading our version of Lenel to increase system stability and support down-stream applications that rely on our service to perform with a higher level of availability
  • Engineers will have the opportunity to prepare our current systems for company-wide upgrade and design new automated deployment solutions, as well as refresh how we monitor
  • We also need to solve for improved methods of certificate rotation and license upgrades that are automated for our team and seamless to end-users
  • AWS-SOC Systems Engineering (SE) team within AWS Security delivers physical security systems to enable our internal customers to execute their jobs safely, securely, and maintain trust
  • As our services grow and expand, we are doing the same with our team
  • We have a high degree of technical acumen but still learn every day in pursuit of providing the highest value to our customers
  • The most amazing thing about our team is the way we all enable each other for success and constantly strive to raise the bar in everything we do. Come build with us!

Our take

Amazon is the world's largest online retailer, and is well-known for its disruption of well-established industries. The company is present in numerous verticals, including cloud computing with Amazon Web Services, AI with its range of Alexa devices and a global marketplace more commonly referred to as 'the everything store'. Acquisitions include Ring, Twitch, Whole Foods Market, and IMDb.

More recently, Amazon has been focused on leading the "third wave in digital advertising". Many businesses are now shifting ad dollars to retailers, which before would have been spent with online media platforms. Amazon's seen great success in the space, with its revenue from advertising now higher than its Amazon Prime membership scheme, audiobooks and digital music combined. This growth is particularly impressive considering its digital ad rivals (like Snap, Alphabet, and Meta) have suffered declines due to wider macroeconomic factors and Apple's iOS privacy changes.

Despite its dominant market position, Amazon will continue to be challenged over the next decade, including sustaining AWS's cloud dominance in the face of Google and Microsoft. On top of this, the company's e-commerce division is facing profitability problems despite its 2023 post-IPO debt funding of 8 billion. It will need to find new ways to stay above their competitors.
