Role
Who you are
- Proven experience as a Platform Engineer or similar role
- Proven experience working with Containers and serverless with Infrastructure as code
- Good knowledge of AWS and GCP cloud security best practices and tooling
- Technical knowledge of best practice security for networks, systems, web applications, APIs and databases
- Good understanding of secure software development practices
- Familiarity with security tools and technologies, such as SIEM, IDS/IPS, WAF and vulnerability scanners
- Knowledge of common adversarial Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (Mitre Att&ck TTPs)
- Knowledge of security standards and frameworks (e.g. ISO27001, NIST CSF) is beneficial
- Relevant security certifications (e.g. GCLD, Security+, AWS/GCP Security Certifications) are a plus
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication and collaboration abilities
What the job involves
- Motorway is rapidly growing its technology team and business, and we are looking for a Platform Security Engineer to help in delivering the best and secure platform for Motorway’s developers
- This role will be the linkage between Platform Engineering and the Security Operations Team to ensure security strategy is aligned and consistently applied
- As a Security Platform Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the security and integrity of our platforms, systems, and data
- Implement and maintain security measures to protect Motorway's platforms and infrastructure (e.g. IAM, network security, secure key management, compute/runtime protections, data encryption)
- Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments
- Collaborate with engineering teams to design and implement secure software development practices(Shift left and Secure by design principles)
- Reduce manual work (toil) for the technology and Security Operations Team using automation (e.g. scripting, workflows, tooling)
- Responsible for monitoring coverage and telemetry quality of the platforms and services
- Determine Motorway platform use cases (e.g. architect SIEM rules)
- Work as part of a virtual SOC with the Security Operations Team to support in security incident response
- Stay up-to-date with the latest security trends and best practices
- Conduct security training and awareness programs for the engineering team
- Assist in the development and maintenance of security policies, standards and procedures
- You’ll be directly reporting to an Engineering Manager, who will help mentor and guide you in your career

Motorway differentiates itself from traditional e-commerce and brick and mortar stores because it’s a marketplace, rather than an inventory. This allows for improved speed and verification. Owners sell their cars 100% online in as little as 24 hours with free car collection, while Motorway also supports car dealerships with a new channel for acquisition of used car stock.
Since being founded in 2017, Motorway has grown rapidly, achieving unicorn status in 2021. It is planning on putting this capital to use expanding both geographically and internally, adding more features to its already well-reviewed product. One such feature is its ULEZ checker, which allows car buyers to assess the environmental compliance of vehicles.
The biggest challenge Motorway faces is competing with other well-funded competitors jumping on this trend, such as Auto1 and Cazoo, as well as established companies like Webuyanycar.com. However, online penetration in the £480 billion British and EU used car market is minimal - suggesting that there is enough market to share amongst Motorway and its competitors.
