Role

Who you are

  • This outstanding role calls for a candidate who can bridge the gap between genomics and machine learning
  • While experience with both is preferable, we remain excited to interview candidates with a very strong computational genomics background and a desire to develop machine learning experience
  • PhD or equivalent experience in a genomics related field
  • Relevant publication record
  • Programming experience
  • Experience with maths and statistics equivalent to first-year university coursework
  • Passion for accelerating science using innovative technologies!

Desirable

  • Experience with data science, scientific computing, and/or machine learning
  • Experience working with assays based on next generation sequencing, high-throughput cellular experiments and/or genetic association studies

What the job involves

  • Research Scientists will demonstrate their domain knowledge in genomics and work alongside scientists and engineers to act as a bridge between the machine learning research and the scientific domain
  • They will have an active research role, helping to define and execute on scientific problems
  • Contribute to our research directions in genomics by using your extensive knowledge of the field to identify impactful research problems that can be solved with machine learning and other computational techniques
  • Guide an interdisciplinary team through the datasets, scientific knowledge, inductive biases, modelling techniques, and collaborations needed to tackle these research problems
  • Work with specialists in machine learning and software engineering to implement and evaluate models and software prototypes
  • Report and present research findings and developments (including status and results) clearly and efficiently both internally and externally
  • Suggest and engage in team collaborations to meet research goals for the wider science programme

Our take

Google DeepMind combines the talents of two leading AI labs, Google Brain and DeepMind. Over the past decade, they have made major breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, which have helped shape the AI industry today.

DeepMind first gained attention with its deep reinforcement learning techniques, especially with the program DQN, which learned to play 49 Atari games just by watching the screen. Its landmark achievement came with AlphaGo, the first AI to beat a world champion in the complex game of Go. Following this success, it tackled even tougher challenges, such as creating AlphaStar, which defeated professional players in StarCraft II, and AlphaFold, which predicts protein structures to advance medical research.

Now operating as Google DeepMind, the organisation uses its computing resources to solve important scientific and engineering problems. Focused on developing AI responsibly, ensuring that its groundbreaking products benefit everyone, With ongoing innovations in areas like generative models and robotics, Google DeepMind is set to lead the next wave of AI advancements while addressing the ethical challenges that come with these technologies.
