Company mission

To democratize access to opportunity and ensure any student can build a great career no matter who they know, where they live or what school they attend.

Role

Who you are

  • Our ideal candidate is highly familiar with marketplaces and/or consumer social products, with a keen interest in user content flywheels and engagement growth strategies. They should be curious about what drives engagement and bring the requisite technical chops to mine our data for answers
  • This person will bring both structure and expertise to nascent and ambiguous product decisions in user engagement, helping the team make informed decisions with a bold yet data-driven approach
  • Specifically, candidates should have proven experience in:
  • User Engagement/Marketplace Growth: Experience driving user engagement and growth strategies in consumer social product and marketplace environments with product and R&D
  • Technical Analytics: SQL fluency and data acumen in still-developing big data environments
  • Data Informed Decision Making: Proven experience in using data to support both product and overall business decisions, directly with business leaders and wider product teams. Including the ability to translate data into key insights for leadership through presentations or memos
  • Problem-solving in ambiguity: Ability to break down ambiguous problems into its components, in a logical and comprehensive manner, initiating and driving impactful solutions accordingly
  • Driving impact cross-functionally: self-driven, able to build collaborative stakeholders relationships and able to prioritize the most impactful work

What the job involves

  • Handshake is hiring a Senior Business Operations Manager, focused on Product User growth, to partner with our Product teams on our mission to help GenZ navigate their careers
  • Our business goal: to 10x consumer engagement and expand our audience to all young professionals. We need your analytical rigor, deep love of consumer social products, and thoughtful understanding of user psychology to hit short- and long-term goals
  • Today, Handshake is the #1 place college students find internships and jobs, uniquely positioned at the intersection of students, employers, and universities. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a new social network that leverages our scale and deep engagement
  • Business Operations is focused on linking the company’s strategic plans, roadmaps and objectives across revenue, product, and user engagement and tying those together with the company’s financial objectives
  • This role will partner daily with our product and RD teams, supporting the planning, measurement, and decision-making cycles around strategic priorities to land the impact
  • You will own our consumer engagement northstar metrics (MAU, DAU etc), analyze major engagement drivers, and help inform our short- and long-term roadmaps
  • You will be a voice in every sprint, business review, and strategy meeting. You will meet regularly with our Chief Product Officer, CFO and our CEO. Your work will be used by individual engineers and by Handshake’s leadership team and board of directors
  • 0-1 Initiating Growth Levers: Identify key drivers of student DAU across our marketplace, from fueling the PMF journey of our new social features to painting a broad picture of overall DAU
  • Planning & Roadmap Prioritization: Assess opportunities and impacts for decision-making, collaborate with product and R&D teams to guide priorities at squad, sprint, and feature levels
  • Measurement and Business Reviews: Define and support key metrics, breaking down strategic metrics into actionable subsets for each sub-team. Contribute to OKR setting and track performance, sharing insights to inform next steps
  • Strategic Decision-Making: Provide analyses for key product decisions, such as new launches and pivots. Use data to form opinions and make recommendations that help drive consensus

Our take

The three founders of Handshake established their company in an attempt to eliminate inequality and make the student hiring landscape fairer. The Handshake platform acts as a LinkedIn for college students, pairing students from every walk of life with more than 650K employers, including the entire Fortune 500, which includes Google and Nike.

The graduate recruitment platform is open to any student with a valid @.edu email address, with more than 12 million active users from thousands of colleges and universities. With a student-first philosophy, the company generates revenue from both universities and employers rather than students.

Valued at $3.5B, Handshake has gained traction in a competitive market, although it has strong competition from recruiting giants LinkedIn and Indeed. It stands out, however, by helping students build new relationships and skills, rather than simply making connections to people they already know.
