What the job involves

  • The underwriting platform team at Coalition is responsible for building and maintaining systems that integrate cutting-edge security data, insurance contract information, and additional proprietary data sources to assess cyber risk.
  • In this role, you’ll be writing backend services and assisting in designing systems that apply a combination of business rules, statistical models, and machine learning models to determine secondary review decisioning, manage the underwriter workflow and monitor underwriting outcomes.
  • Our platform comprises services written in Python and Go. We prioritize selecting the most suitable tools for each task and make pragmatic decisions to scale and decouple systems as we expand. You'll work on an extremely cross-functional team that collaborates closely both internally and externally with the larger engineering organization
  • Writing scalable and clean code, write unit and integration tests, ship with high quality and confidence
  • Create alerts, monitors and dashboards to ensure operational stability and observability
  • Lead small projects independently or work with a team of engineers for medium-large projects, collaborating with stakeholders

Our take

The cybersecurity industry has been going through a record-breaking period of investment. This trend has emerged as more companies move to cloud-based networks following the increase of out-of-office work, thus increasing the risk of cyber attacks. However, many cutting-edge cyber defences are too expensive for many companies.

Coalition’s joint offering of cyber security tools, a risk management platform, and cyber insurance allows companies to manage the ever-present risk of cyber threats.

The company has made a strong start since its 2017 launch, raising nearly $800 million in funding. There are a number of other fast-growth startups in the cybersecurity space, including Wiz and Orca Security, but Coalition’s shrewd insurance-based model is what sets it apart from the competition. The company has set out on a path toward global expansion, branching out from the US and Canadian markets to bring its solutions to the UK, whilst also acquiring smaller competitors like JUMBO.
