What the job involves

  • You will help to shape the future of Wise across the Group
  • We're looking for a Risk Manager to join our North America Risk Team
  • In this second line of defense role, you'll give support to Wisers in rolling out and embedding core elements of the risk management framework, with a focus on operational risk
  • We need to make sure we're identifying the right risks and growing in control, but we want to do so whilst continuing with our agile "test and learn" approach to launching products
  • You will build and support the implementation and day-to-day management of the operational risk framework, provide guidance on events, support risk assessments, help assess the impact of control gaps, and use data analytics to help build the right risk reporting dashboards
  • Supporting our risk leadership team on key projects that have an impact across the business regionally and globally
  • Supporting the implementation and operation of our operational risk management framework, including embedding of the risk and control self assessment process, risk incident post mortems and issues management, including impact assessment to help with remediation prioritisation, risk assessment of new product and growth initiatives governance, and more
  • Partnering with ‘first line’ teams across the business to support the design and launch of new products and features by ensuring that key risks are identified and mitigated prior to launch
  • Managing and following up on operational risk events and issues that occur
  • Support first line teams in documenting, solutioning, and impact assessment and prioritisation of control gaps
  • Ongoing oversight of issue remediation activities using our risk management tool (Audit Board) to ensure appropriate risk focused prioritisation, and help validate closure of remediated issues
  • Conduct in-depth reviews, risk assessments and control mapping across our most material risks
  • Create dashboards using data analytics tools (Looker and Superset) to report on losses and key risk indicators in order to help set risk tolerance thresholds and identify actionable insights
  • Coordinate the quarterly residual risk assessment process across the risk taxonomy, including loss and incident reporting, to inform our regional risk profile for reporting to local and global risk committees, and to our local board
  • Promoting and helping embed a strong risk culture, making risk meaningful and relevant to everyone at Wise

Our take

Wise started when the two founders realised they would be better off trading Estonian kroons for British pounds (and vice versa) between themselves rather than going through banks. That was back in 2011, and they've since grown Wise into one of Europe's most successful tech businesses, exchanging billions of currency every month.

Wise rapidly grew by solving a significant problem for customers, who lost too much money to banks when exchanging currency. They've attracted investment from some of the best investors in the world, from Andreesen Horowitz to Index Ventures and even Richard Branson.

The challenge for Wise will be maintaining their edge and brand power in a market that's becoming increasingly crowded with new entrants (like Revolut and Monzo) and incumbents (traditional banks) trying to catch up. To do so, the company is ramping up its digital and marketing strategies, as well as pushing for further development of its existing products.
