Who you are

  • You have a track record of recruiting, retaining, and developing engineers of exceptional ability
  • You can proudly point to the technology shipped by the team(s) you’ve led and the tangible impact it has had on your business and its users
  • While you’ve enjoyed your transition to management, you remain deeply passionate about (and skilled at) building technology
  • You are curious about all aspects of Relay’s business, and are excited to work with other leaders across functions like operations, finance, and commercial
  • You have deep empathy for the humans for whom you build technology, including customers, partners, and your fellow colleagues. You seek out the chance to hear directly from them and go out of your way to incorporate their feedback into your work
  • You value and practise clear communication, active listening, and intentional collaboration
  • We are specifically looking for candidates who have led a team- or teams of engineers in a high-performing organisation for at least three years
  • Experience as a startup founder or in early stage teams is a strong plus, but not required

What the job involves

  • We’re looking for an engineering manager to lead our logistics foundations and scale their technology and organisation as Relay grows
  • Lead our engineering efforts across routing, operational efficiency, and Relay’s core services and API
  • Scale our logistics foundations in tandem with Relay’s business growth, starting from a single team and evolving into an organisation of teams
  • Take cross-functional ownership of critical business outcomes, such as company-wide efficiency metrics
  • Partner closely with leaders across the business, not just in technology
  • Spend time in the field gaining a visceral understanding of how our couriers and end customers experience Relay’s technology
  • Guide critical decisions affecting Relay’s technical infrastructure
  • Foster a culture of technical and operational excellence

In recent years, e-commerce has grown considerably. Despite this, the retail sector is still in the early innings of digital disruption in the US and the UK (especially when compared to more digitally mature markets such as China).

Relay enables e-commerce through re-wiring the critical delivery infrastructure to address the growth of e-commerce in the UK. Not only do they enable orders of magnitude better delivery in speed and cost for retailers and consumers, but they are also doubling down on making sure their ecosystem of delivery drivers and the planet benefit.

Relay are early stage, and backed by founders who both have considerable experience at delivery service company, Stuart. With this expertise and solving a problem within a growing market, the company are well set make a difference to how retailers provide online delivery.
