  • Deep technical understanding of wireless protocols including 802.x, multi-band and cellular
  • Proven ability to leverage technical depth and business acumen to lead strategic tradeoffs and executive-level product recommendations
  • Experience defining and launching innovative end-to-end product workflows spanning HW, SW and cloud
  • Highly facilitative team player who strives to enable others to do their best work
  • A passion for speaking with -- and learning from -- customers
  • An advanced degree (e.g. MBA), or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Specific experience working closely and negotiating with cellular providers, rolling out new products on their networks
  • A background in electrical engineering, wireless engineering, mechanical engineering, or computer science
  • Direct experience leading products in Robotics, AI, drones or aviation categories
  • Experience working closely with Utilities, Public Safety or Defense customers

What the job involves

  • As the Principal Product Manager for wireless technologies & radios, you will own Skydio’s roadmap for wireless capabilities spanning the direct connectivity with our controllers, to 5G cellular and overall network connectivity
  • To do this, you will work closely with our hardware, wireless and embedded software engineering teams to help define and shape both the underlying technology and also the radio products themselves
  • You will also be working directly with customers to build out our industry-leading workflows to unlock scaled remote operations across Utilities, Public Safety and Federal markets
  • Be the product owner for Skydio’s cellular (LTE, 5G), Enterprise wireless technologies (802.x) and Federal multi-band radio protocols, settings, controls and workflows
  • Be the product owner for radios themselves - both as components built into our controllers and drones, but also to launch standalone productized radio units
  • Engage with customers and internal stakeholders to understand core business problems and develop visions and strategies to solve them
  • Work cross-functionally, and in close cooperation with the hardware engineering and wireless teams, to define new products, scope and prioritize features, and maintain a clear wireless product roadmap
  • Work closely with designers and other product leaders to build out end-to-end wireless workflows that are delightful for both technical and non-technical customers
  • Drive technical and business tradeoffs, providing executive-level recommendations, as the wireless subject matter expert for Product Management
  • Capture, document, and distill feedback from customers and internal testers to continually improve your products and features
  • Partner with Product Marketing to develop launch plans, product positioning and messaging to bring your products to market
  • Collaborate closely with Sales and Customer Success to build and maintain close customer relationships, and ensure proper training and support

Our take

A leader in autonomous flight, Skydio builds drones that can track and film targets while avoiding obstacles. Its products have a wide range of applications, most notably for businesses that need to undertake inspections in unsafe places. The drones are also valuable to search and rescue efforts, police forces, and the US army.

Backed by a range of top investors and strategic partners (including Andreesen Horowitz, Levitate Capital, and Next 47) Skydio sets itself apart from its competitors by marketing its products predominantly to businesses. With technology such as 3D scanning and a 360-degree superzoom mode, its drones have a wide range of applications and functionality.

The company raised funding in 2023, which has boosted its valuation to over $2 billion. It has since focussed on R&D, developing and launching the X10 model which is designed for first responders and the military, as well as enhancing its remote control and thermal imaging capabilities. As the largest American drone company, there is no reason Skydio shouldn't remain a key industry actor for years to come.
