Role
Who you are
- Significant commercial experience with JavaScript. In particular, experience with ES6/7 features, and technologies and frameworks/libraries such as React, Node.js, Vue, Express or Sequelize)
- Any previous work with image uploading and OCR processing will be incredibly useful
- Familiarity with translations, accessibility and best practices
- Understanding of web design patterns, including SOLID principles of design
- Typescript is a bonus, but not essential
- Previous experience working in a company scaling up is useful, but not essential
- Experience working in a collaborative, agile team environment
- Experience working with automated testing and continuous integration and delivery
What the job involves
- As a Senior Frontend Engineer you will join a team that is responsible for building new and innovative products that target millions of users
- You’ll be working with a team of between 8-10 people in an agile squad, part of a wider community of practice in both Engineering and the Front End Guild
- Architect and develop new JavaScript code, with a mix of new features and performance optimisation
- Work to improve performance and stability of our applications as we scale
- Focus on building highly maintainable, reusable, scalable and reliable code
- Develop front-end technology, launching new features with a focus on user experience and reliability
- Bring industry best practices to everything you do
- Work hand in hand with design and product to collaboratively build work that has excellent UX and quality values - each squad has a dedicated product owner and design lead
- Be part of our flat-structured development team and being involved in the technical and product strategy of the business
- Champion and implement software development best practices to ensure our code is high quality, well-tested, scalable and secure
- We regularly do hackdays! We believe in a culture of innovation in our day-to-day life. Experiment with new techniques, tools and frameworks to keep Motorway at the leading edge of modern JavaScript Development
- You’ll be directly reporting to an Engineering Manager, who will help mentor and guide you in your career

Like many industries, the second-hand car market has undergone significant transformation, with more and more dealers and car owners looking to buy and sell cars online. Motorway is one of a handful of online car marketplaces that are capitalising on this trend.
Motorway differentiates itself from traditional e-commerce and brick and mortar stores because it’s a marketplace, rather than an inventory. This allows for improved speed and verification. Owners sell their cars 100% online in as little as 24 hours with free car collection, while Motorway also supports car dealerships with a new channel for acquisition of used car stock.
Since being founded in 2017, Motorway has grown rapidly, achieving unicorn status in 2021. It is planning on putting this capital to use expanding both geographically and internally, adding more features to its already well-reviewed product. One such feature is its ULEZ checker, which allows car buyers to assess the environmental compliance of vehicles.
The biggest challenge Motorway faces is competing with other well-funded competitors jumping on this trend, such as Auto1 and Cazoo, as well as established companies like Webuyanycar.com. However, online penetration in the £480 billion British and EU used car market is minimal - suggesting that there is enough market to share amongst Motorway and its competitors.
