Company mission

To build a new kind of bank that makes money work for everyone.

Role

Who you are

  • You’ve led the design of world-class product launches in a fast-growing company before
  • You understand that good design is not about trends but is built on top of principles and tradeoffs
  • You make well-reasoned design decisions always advocating for the best possible user experience
  • You’re passionate about inclusive design and accessibility, and you’ll design with all our users in mind
  • You care about the UI design details but are also comfortable zooming out, seeing the broader picture and connecting the dots to create a cohesive overall experience
  • You’re familiar with native mobile design patterns on Android and iOS and have designed polished apps for both platforms
  • You’re passionate about sharing your knowledge, and raising the bar for design practice at Monzo
  • Previous experience mentoring designers is a big plus
  • You understand that writing is designing, you're a confident writer, and the copy in your screens is never an afterthought

What the job involves

  • Our Product Design team at Monzo is currently made up of 60 people across Product Design, User Research and Branding, lead by our VP of Design, Vuokko Aro
  • You’ll lead your squad to iterate on our existing Borrowing Products to help them truly meet both customer and business needs
  • Together with your discovery team, you’ll unpack opportunity areas and set visions for new borrowing products that meet needs we aren’t serving
  • You’ll work with your squad to break longer term visions down into well defined pieces and deliver against them
  • Understanding complex problem spaces, and collaborating across multiple disciplines to deliver simple, informative, and delightful experiences customers love
  • Sharing work with your squad, design and leadership, remaining humble and open to feedback while not shying away from expressing your own opinion
  • Holding a high bar for design in our Borrowing products, expanding the problem space to include all inputs that affect the final experience
  • You'll have a good sense of how to prioritise, working in an ambiguous space where you are constantly experimenting to find the best solution
  • You’ll collaborate regularly using strong communication, documentation and facilitation skills
  • You’ll work closely with PMs, Engineers, Data scientists, User researchers and writers to make sure your team isn’t just shipping great designs, but they are deeply involved throughout the design process

Application process

  • Initial call (30 minutes). A video chat with Natalie who is part of our hiring team. This focuses on general suitability and fit for Monzo
  • Portfolio Walk-through (45 minutes+). We'll ask you to prepare 1 case study which demonstrates your end-to-end design process and deliverables. You will go through this with our Design Manager for Borrowing and another designer in the team where they will ask follow up questions, digging deeper into your process and work
  • Final round (2.5-3 hours). This involves 3 interviews covering craft, impact and teamwork. These typically happen across 2 days via three separate video calls. The portfolio submitted is used as a reference for these interviews to help set context for us, and save you time repeating yourself
  • This process should take around 2-3 weeks - your schedule is really important to us, so we promise to be as flexible as possible!

Our take

Monzo is a challenger bank that fully operates online and offers a full range of current, savings, business accounts, and more. The speed of the challenger banks to provide a great experience has been impressive, and the number of competitors appearing has proven the consumer desire for innovation.

Monzo remains one of the popular online banks, with more than 6 million active users. The company faces competition from more traditional banks, such as Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, which have launched their own digital banks. However, the new technologies that the company is built on enable it to expand quickly (with fewer issues) than the incumbent players' offerings.

With an increasing amount of people switching banks, the company's ever-expanding suite of banking and financial services (such as its buy-now-pay-later offering) has resulted in Monzo receiving the second-highest net switching gains among digital challenger banks (just behind Starling).

After setting U.S. expansion plans aside in 2020, the company launched in the U.S. market in early 2022, partnering with Sutton Bank to provide its U.S. accounts. After several years focused on narrowing its losses, Monzo hit profitability in the first two months of 2023. In the same year, 2 million new customers joined, tallying its customer base at 9 million in 2024.
