Role

Who you are

  • We're looking for an experienced Senior Hardware Engineer passionate about data center technology
  • Technical Degree (BS Computer Science/Engineering) or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong understanding of x86 server hardware architecture and subsystems. Ideally, you’ve worked with non-x86 hardware too!
  • Demonstrated professional proficiency in configuration management best-practices (we use Ansible and Chef)
  • Experience automating server components at large-scale using industry-standard tooling (Redfish, IPMI, etc) including a deep understanding of benchmarking, automating test frameworks, and process automation in general
  • Practical knowledge of PXE boot, UEFI, Linux/OS boot, AMI/OEM BIOS distributions, OpenBMC/AMI/OEM BMC implementations, RAID and other storage resiliency technologies, and the full Network stack- from NIC firmware to TCP/IP
  • Adept at Linux (or Unix) operating systems. You’ll be spending a lot of time working in one!
  • Comfortable with version control systems (we use Git) and proficient in at least one programming language (such as Python or Go)
  • Ability to participate in 24/7 on-call rotation with other members of the team
  • Excellent communication skills, both within the team and with the broader company
  • Have an insatiable passion for hardware, both new and old

What the job involves

  • Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure Engineering Design, you will play a key role in designing the next generation of server platforms that support DigitalOcean's growth
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external vendors, you'll bring innovative hardware solutions to life
  • Your technical expertise will be essential in resolving hardware issues, streamlining processes, and guiding your fellow engineers
  • As DigitalOcean expands its infrastructure and explores new technologies, your contributions will have a direct impact on our ability to serve our customers
  • Architecting the Future: Collaborate with internal stakeholders to translate product roadmaps into next-generation server hardware requirements that align with DigitalOcean's mission
  • Technical Expertise & Escalation: Provide expert-level troubleshooting and resolution for system hardware issues impacting both customers and internal operations
  • Automation & Validation: Enhance firmware and hardware configuration automation and validation processes, ensuring optimal performance and reliability of both platforms and components (NIC, Storage, BMC)
  • Directly influence the future of server technology, shaping innovative solutions that drive business growth and competitive advantage
  • Unlock new levels of innovation and agility in server design, leveraging ODM partnerships to adapt quickly to market demands
  • Guide server platforms from inception to production, ensuring high quality, timely delivery, and successful market adoption

Our take

DigitalOcean offers computer network and storage capabilities that enable its users to quickly set up online businesses. Straightforward tools and attractive pricing have attracted hundreds of thousands of customers in the last decade, including pop superstar Beyoncé, who hosted a new album release on the company’s servers during its early years.

DigitalOcean has a strong customer base, but must continue to improve to stay relevant in such an extremely competitive space. The company battles with rivals such as Amazon Web Service, Microsoft Azure and Google's Cloud Platform, which are the undisputed leaders in the cloud computing market. Wisely, DigitalOcean avoids direct confrontation with these giants by focusing more on small businesses and startups and providing more savings opportunities for its users.

The company has boasted clients such as GitLab, Slack and HashiCorp amongst its impressive lists of customers. Additionally, the company has acquired Cloudways in a move to further simplify workflows for its clients that are looking to scale their digital businesses, it opened a new data center in Sydney, and expects to see a revenue rise between 9% and 12% over 2024.
