Who you are

  • 8+ years of industry experience in software development leading large and strategic high-impact areas in business
  • 2+ years of experience directly managing a team of engineers
  • Technical leadership and ownership in bringing multiple engineering functions to production
  • Production experience with scalable, and distributed systems
  • Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and autonomy
  • Ability to work with a wide breadth of stakeholders/partners through product management, data science, design, security, etc

What the job involves

  • The Banking Engineering Team at Varo Bank is small but is rapidly growing
  • The Banking engineering team is responsible for building and maintaining engineering solutions that power Varo’s core banking to achieve our goal of disrupting the banking industry and building products that help improve the financial well-being of our customers
  • You will get to work with new technology stacks, be part of a great and diverse workplace, and improve the financial lives of others

  • Define scope, design, build, and evolve business-critical and customer-facing banking products. Execution speed and timeliness are critical to achieve our business goals
  • Help support your system in production and investigate and fix bugs throughout our entire stack. You are expected to push code to production
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams and leaders in product management, data science, and design to execute effectively on business goals. Approach each project with a product and customer-first mindset to provide them with seamless experiences
  • Define your team roadmap and vision following the company and department goals
  • Mentor and coach your team to help them grow, and hire new exceptional talent when needed
  • Shape the culture of your team to foster innovation, ownership, accountability, urgency, and a customer-first mindset

Our take

The traditional banking system leaves many US citizens underserved, with some minority groups struggling to access accounts. Varo is one of many companies offering no-fee, high-interest accounts, as it takes on the traditional banks - with additional features such as a rewards program and access to early paychecks.

With many young customers distrustful of traditional banks, Varo has capitalised on this sentiment and grown to serve more than 7 million customers. It has a number of competitors such as Chime and Step, and it's also in competition with established traditional brick-and-mortar banks. However, as the first consumer fintech to be granted a national bank charter in the US, the company is at the front of the fintech revolution with a path to future success.

In response to economic uncertainty, the bank was forced to take cost-reduction measures throughout 2022. The effect has been positive, with a drastic reduction in its burn rate, which had been a primary concern. One point of interest is a shift in marketing strategy that has seen Varo focus more on growing the number of customers using it as their main bank, as opposed to growing overall user numbers. The company also has a new tech unit named "Varo Tech".
