To make reusable packaging as affordable and scaleable as single use.
Xav Kearney
CTO of Otta
The drive to develop reusable packaging is widely recognised as a critical step in mitigating the annual disposal of 14 billion tonnes of packaging into landfills. This pressing concern has spurred numerous startups to address the issue, with a recent influx of substantial venture capital funding further fueling their efforts. Among the beneficiaries of this funding surge is Again.
Again is currently in the process of creating a compact, automated packaging cleaning facility known as the CleanCell. These CleanCells can be widely deployed to establish a decentralised network of micro-cleaning sites. Notably, this infrastructure has the potential to render packaging reuse financially viable for large enterprise Fast-Moving COnsumer Goods (FMCG) companies, a challenge that startups like noissue and Packoorang, which design new reusable packaging materials from the ground up, have yet to fully overcome. The approach hinders on building upon existing packaging practices to facilitate a more seamless, large-scale integration.
Currently, Again is conducting a pilot program with major manufacturers such as Diageo, the Budweiser Brewing Group, and Biffa, focusing on cleaning used bottles collected from various locations in London. With strong backing from investors already in place, the success of this project could herald a substantial transformation within the industry.
