- 10+ years of professional software development experience
- Proven experience in leading the development of both greenfield and legacy features (Ruby on Rails, Typescript, and React experience is preferred but not mandatory)

- Strong mentorship skills with a track record of fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement within a team
- Experience acting as a technical leader, solving complex problems, and driving innovation
- Ability to develop and enhance the team’s software development processes and technical approaches
- Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (preferred but not mandatory)
What the job involves
- As the Senior Staff Software Engineer for Gusto Start, you will spearhead the development of a new product aimed at an entirely new customer base
- This role involves repackaging existing features and implementing new functionalities in legacy systems to better support our new customers
- You will be responsible for defining the technical roadmap, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders, managing daily team operations, and mentoring and guiding engineers
- Our team is dedicated to expanding Gusto’s reach by developing both greenfield and legacy features aimed at a new customer segment
- Our mission is to grow this customer base and continuously test and refine a suite of tools designed to help these customers hire their first employee

- Define and execute the technical roadmap for the new product, ensuring alignment with overall business goals
- Lead the development of both new (greenfield) and legacy features using Ruby on Rails, Typescript, and React to support the new customer segment
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product Management, Design, and Marketing, to deliver high-quality solutions
- Mentor and guide engineers on the team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement
- Develop the team’s software development process and technical approaches to ensure efficient and effective project execution
- Drive the implementation of new functionality in legacy systems to enhance support for the new customer base
- Act as the technical leader for the team, pioneering solutions and overcoming challenges to innovate and drive the project forward
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain code quality standards
Our take
For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy which many SMB owners don’t have. The three co-founders of Gusto – all coming from small business backgrounds – collaborated on a Fintech company that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.
The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 200,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. In 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and its position in a competitive market, including two other fintech startups, Ardius and Symmetry.
Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. Although Gusto has found itself impacted by the macroeconomic situation, through the significant effect it has had on its clientele, the company still appears positive for the future after raising funds in 2023 that will see it reach key profitability benchmarks. It continues to consolidate its platform, for example by integrating with OpenComp to grant its users access to the company's Compensation Intelligence Platform.
