Who you are

  • BS/BA degree or equivalent years of experience
  • 10+ minimum years of experience in communications or public relations
  • Strong command of the media, policy and cultural landscape, with experience working with senior stakeholders
  • Deep knowledge of tech policy issues, with in-house experience, preferably at a publicly traded company
  • Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to experiment in order to learn and identify creative solutions
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and independently manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Ability to build strong working relationships cross-functionally and across different time zones
  • Ability to balance critical thinking with tactical execution and attention to detail, in the face of frequent inbound enquiries and other requests
  • Excellent news and overall judgment, as well as exceptional writing and communications skills
  • Able to serve as a Snap spokesperson as needed

What the job involves

  • We’re looking for a Director to lead our policy communications team
  • Lead all policy and related communications strategies to shape and protect the reputation of Snap among key stakeholders, including policymakers, safety advocates, and more
  • Run a US-based policy communications team across LA, DC and NY, and guide our non US comms team members to ensure tight alignment with the global strategy and desired outcomes
  • Develop and drive meaningful public affairs campaigns that support Snap’s business goals
  • Support Snap’s policy team to educate and advance Snap’s position on emerging and established policies and government regulations
  • Partner closely with leaders across Snap’s policy, legal, platform safety, platform integrity and other teams to drive positive impact for the business, our partners, and Snapchatters
  • Lead our rapid response program to ensure media and other thought leaders have access to accurate and timely information
  • Manage high volume, fast paced litigation environments in collaboration with Snap’s legal team
  • Collaborate with a close-knit global communications team to help support our communications priorities

Our take

Snap is the social media giant that owns Snapchat, a social media mobile app released in 2011. Created to serve as a more emotive communication form than texting, the app has gained mass popularity, reaching upwards of 400 million daily users worldwide.

After rejecting a billion dollar acquisition from Meta (then Facebook) in 2013, Snap has found itself in competition with the social media giant, particularly with Instagram. Despite this, the company has marked a place for itself in the ever competitive social media space through developing features like a Discover tab, augmented reality lenses, in-app games, ads and monetisation options, as well as launching its paid service, Snapchat+.

Snap has so far not earned an annual profit since going public in 2017, but as Snapchat's user base has continually increased it has nearly closed the gap. Like other tech companies it suffered in late 2022 due to a surprise drop in advertising revenue, but has been rebuilding to its former trajectory since then. Given Snapchat's lasting popularity amongst young people, further success appears likely.
