Role

Who you are

  • A product manager with a passion for data and an analytical mindset
  • Love working with teams in areas like data engineering, analytics, machine learning or data science
  • Enjoy making sense of complex domains and sharing that understanding with others
  • Understand and embrace the highs and lows of teamwork in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to pivot to new priorities effectively
  • Feel at home collaborating with engineers and business leaders alike
  • Find joy in cutting through opinions with data and evidence
  • Know that building something great together takes resilience, perseverance, and a growth mindset
  • Recognise that everyone has their own strengths and seek ways to bring out the best in yourself and others
  • Know when it’s best to write something, say something, or show something to communicate your ideas
  • An ability to drive the delivery of cross-functional teams, ideally with Scrum, Kanban and other Agile methods
  • A focus on quality and accuracy when building data products
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts simply to business and technical stakeholders at all levels

Desirable

  • Experience of using and building data products, perhaps as part of a Data Mesh implementation
  • Knowledge of DataHub or Monte Carlo, or similar products in the Modern Data Stack
  • Experience of cloud platforms. Google Cloud Platform would be ideal
  • Familiarity with BigQuery, Looker, Tableau, or similar tools
  • Conversant in data quality principles, its importance to the business and its complexity

What the job involves

  • As the Product Manager for the Data Warehousing team you will:
  • Own the Vision: you will be responsible for owning the long term vision, and driving the quarterly roadmap for the data warehouse
  • Know your Customer: you will build strong relationships with business stakeholders, analysts, data scientists and engineers from across OVO teams to understand their perspectives of working with OVO’s data, and represent their voices into the rest of your team
  • Align, Prioritise and Measure: As per OVO’s Product and Tech culture, you will use OKRs and agile methodologies to break down work and ship value to the business via continuous delivery, actively measuring outcomes against goals, and iterating towards your product vision state
  • Support your Team: You will work alongside a dedicated and highly skilled team of engineers, supporting them with the right prioritisation, to deliver value from the warehouse in line with OVO’s data strategy
  • Develop an excellent understanding of the needs of your various diverse stakeholders across OVO, and their use cases for analytical data
  • Define their problems and requirements, ideally finding common areas of pain/benefit to drive the greatest benefit for minimum effort
  • Break down and prioritise tasks by quantification of cost and effort against the benefit to the business
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure the priority calls you make are in line with strategic business direction
  • Support the engineering team using Agile methods to plan and deliver work
  • Champion your product in and outside of your team to ensure the greatest reach and impact across OVO

Our take

On average, home energy represents 26% of our carbon footprint. Ovo Energy wants to bring this to zero by providing cheaper, greener and simpler energy to customers. They are analysing meter data to deliver easy, personalised actions, turning electric vehicles into power stations with clever chargers, and building energy-efficient heaters. For households, their offering is organised into four different energy plans. that include interest rewards on energy credit balance.

In 2020, OVO completed the acquisition of SSE Energy Services' retail arm for £500 million, meaning that the challenger brand now has around 4 million customers in the UK.

While helping Ovo members halve their carbon footprints, the company is also working towards becoming a net zero carbon business by 2035. The challenges ahead for the company include encouraging consumer behaviour change, shifting towards subscription models for home energy use.
