What the job involves

  • We are in search of a visionary Director of Product-Led Growth to lead our initiatives in growth, customer acquisition, and lifecycle management. In this crucial role, you will craft and execute a strategy that caters to the full experience of our SMB and mid-market customers, spanning multiple industries and verticals
  • This leadership position will focus on enhancing every stage of the customer journey—from initial interest and acquisition, through sign-up, onboarding, and subscription phases, and beyond
  • As a leader of leaders, you will be responsible for reinventing the customer’s first interactions with Docker, creating a smooth, engaging experience that empowers them to effortlessly discover increasing value at each step
  • Partner with teams across technology, marketing, sales, and analytics to establish the vision and operational practices for a top-tier growth team
  • Pinpoint and define major product opportunities that are deeply focused on the customer, delivering transformative value that directly drives business growth
  • Unite C-suite executives, senior leaders, and product heads around a bold and cohesive growth strategy, while balancing and negotiating various objectives
  • Foster a culture of experimentation by employing a hypothesis-driven design approach. Implement processes for quickly gathering data, running fast experiments, and developing repeatable frameworks for ongoing growth
  • Lead Docker’s global product-led growth (PLG) strategy, driving user engagement, retention, activation, and revenue expansion across our product suite
  • Design an intuitive and compelling first-time user experience that immediately demonstrates the value of Docker to new users
  • Explore and implement improvements throughout the customer lifecycle, with a focus on activation, onboarding, and cross-selling opportunities
  • Work closely with the analytics team to develop a strategy for experimentation and measurement that drives long-term success and supports accurate forecasting of high-impact experiments
  • Prioritize initiatives and make critical investment decisions that align with the team’s vision and product roadmaps
  • Build and guide a talented team of Product Managers and Growth Engineers, fostering a data-driven, customer-centric mindset
  • Lead with product excellence, encouraging a fast-paced, results-oriented environment while maintaining high standards, accountability, and promoting diverse perspectives
  • Cultivate a supportive and inclusive culture that unites talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, leveraging strong communication and customer obsession to develop industry-leading products
  • Support the broader product organization through mentorship, active involvement in recruitment, and contributing to product initiatives
  • Continuously seek ways to enhance the customer journey, focusing on lifecycle stages such as activation, onboarding, and expansion
  • 30 Days:
  • Onboard with the company, meet key team members, and understand the company culture
  • Gain a deep understanding of the current growth strategies and the state of PLG across different product portfolios
  • Begin building relationships with cross-functional teams and key stakeholders
  • Start participating in the growth group calls
  • 90 Days:
  • Review growth performance, analyzing data and using insights to identify opportunities
  • Kick off PLG effort on a few projects in collaboration with the Growth Engineer and Growth Marketing team
  • Present the first Growth strategies for review
  • Establish regular reporting and communication channels with stakeholders
  • 1 Year:
  • A clear and ambitious product growth strategy has been implemented, resulting in notable improvements in user engagement, retention, and revenue growth
  • Strategic growth initiatives, like customer-centric product opportunities, have been defined and executed, with measurable business growth and customer value delivered
  • A culture of experimentation has taken root, with a hypothesis-driven design approach integrated into the team’s daily operations
  • Efficient processes for rapid experimentation and data collection are in place, leading to a cycle of continual learning and iteration. Playbooks for successful growth experiments have been developed and deployed, creating a foundation for ongoing growth
  • A new, intuitive, and engaging first-time user experience has been designed and implemented, leading to higher conversion rates from sign-up to activation
  • The user onboarding process is seamless, helping customers quickly realize Docker’s value, resulting in increased satisfaction and reduced churn
  • Improvements across the customer lifecycle (activation, onboarding, and cross-selling) have led to higher retention rates and expanded usage among existing customers
  • Cross-sell and upsell initiatives are generating meaningful additional revenue
  • Continuous improvements have been made across all stages of the customer journey, with clear enhancements in customer activation, onboarding, and product engagement metrics

Our take

Docker supplies a hub and desktop solution to simplify the workflow of app development teams. Originally known for popularising the idea of containerising software, it saw itself outpaced by Kubernetes. However, the company has identified a problem with the growing complexity of containerisation, with some apps consisting of dozens or even hundreds of containers - which is what it now addresses.

Docker has had a difficult time in the recent past, with 2019 seeing it sell off its enterprise business, reduce its workforce by hundreds, and change its leadership team. As a well known brand and ecosystem for containerisation, however, it aims to lure developers back to its product as well as to take advantage of the growing global demand for app development.

Returning to focus on developers rather than large companies was certainly a gamble, but one that seems to have paid off. The company has returned to profitability and raised Series C funding in 2022, which is cited to fund hiring new talent, ramping up its business, and continuing to develop and refine its product.
