Role
Who you are
- You have 3+ years of experience from companies with a strong engineering culture, within a growth context
- You are fluent in Java and know frameworks such as Spring, Spring Boot, JUnit, and Mockito
- You have hands-on experience with Git, Docker, and Kubernetes, and monitoring solutions (Datadog)
- You know what service-oriented architecture looks like, and you can determine when to apply a given architectural pattern
- You have good communication skills and you’re definitely a team player, being eager to share and learn from your teammates and to grow altogether as a team
- You are able to take ownership, aligned with business priorities
- Full working proficiency in English

What the job involves
- We are looking for 2 Confirmed Backend Software Engineers to join the Search team and the Booking team at Blablacar
- Search team mission is to enable passengers to seamlessly choose the most relevant multimodal trip from our carpool, bus, and soon train supplies
- As a Backend Engineer, your role will be to contribute to delivering a reliable and scalable multimodal search platform
- You will be reporting to Louise and working with a fullstack team of 12 engineers
- Booking team mission is to optimise our multimodal (carpool, bus, and very soon train supplies) booking and checkout experience for passengers, by integrating and unifying multiple heterogeneous inventory sources from external partners
- As a Backend Engineer, your role will be to work on technical challenges and product feature developments from early-stage conception, to development, testing strategy, deployment in production and monitoring
- You will be reporting to Clothilde and working with a fullstack team of 10 engineers
- Participate in the design, development, and maintenance of the Java microservices that serve the team flow for the Blablacar platform and ensure they are scalable, robust and easy to use by frontend developers
- Participate in the whole application lifecycle, from early meetings and design to development, test strategy, and deployment - and of course, monitoring, alerting, and support
- Participate in the definition of the features with the product and design teams to find the most relevant solutions for our members
- Interact with people with different roles and backgrounds, and share your technical expertise with a mix of technical, product, and business people

- A 30-min video call with Gilles, VP of Engineering to give you a more strategic view on our engineering directions

Our take
Travelling can be an expensive process, with public transport and petrol costs forming a significant contribution towards this. Many people choose to purchase last-minute bus tickets or travel in carpools to minimize costs and carbon emissions, but these opportunities can be difficult to find and there is no framework to locate them and assess their legitimacy.
BlaBlaCar provides an online marketplace for connecting travelers with carpools and spare seats on buses in order to provide a budget alternative to traditional means of travel. Drivers can sign up to provide a carpool service, and BlaBlaCar verifies the identity and reviews of both carpool drivers and bus companies to ensure that the budget service is fully regulated.
Budget alternatives to traditional public transport and driving routes are nothing new, but BlaBlaCar has taken a unique approach by greatly minimizing costs and encouraging efficiency by providing a regulated framework for carpooling. Furthermore, the company provides last-minute and predetermined bus seats, reducing costs for users whilst preventing buses from travelling wastefully with empty seats. It's this unique business model which helped spring BlaBlaCar into profitability in 2022, and a 2024 debt funding round is being used to acquire other businesses and expand its reach.
