Company mission

To shape an accessible and open digital economy for everyone.

Role

Who you are

  • At least 6 years of experience as a software engineer, 1+ of which should have been in a low-latency retail crypto exchange
  • Strong fluency in event-driven system design patterns, leveraging technologies such as Kafka, Flink, and Debezium, as well as distributed systems more generally
  • Strong fluency in at least one of the following languages: Kotlin/Java, Typescript, Go
  • Strong fluency and opinionation in database choice and schema design for highly performant and scalable applications
  • Familiarity with common architectural patterns in financial exchanges, including sequencer architectures, matching engines, and order books
  • Blockchain or smart contract experience

What the job involves

  • We are looking for the core architect and lead engineer on OpenSea v2.0 — making key recommendations and decisions on technology choices, event driven patterns, service topology, and overall design philosophy
  • Form, communicate, and execute on a technical vision for the next generation of OpenSea’s architecture that leverages highly scalable and event-driven patterns
  • Write reliable, low latency marketplace infrastructure software that will eventually process billions of dollars a day worth of transaction volume, including highly performant blockchain indexing systems, order management systems at scale, and REST & Websocket API endpoints
  • Raise the bar for internal understanding of best practices in building highly performant & event-driven systems with “live” characteristics
  • Mentor and train other team members and act as an internal thought leader and agitator for architectural rigor and cleanliness

Otta's take

OpenSea is a peer-to-peer digital marketplace for NFTs or uniquely identifiable digital items. These items are authenticated with blockchain and are part of a new internet economy that consists of digital products representing art, game characters, domain names, and event tickets.

The OpenSea platform allows users to both purchase NFTs or list digital items for sale. The platform initially encountered speed issues when NFT trading boomed due to the limitations of the Ethereum blockchain technology it was using. However, the company has transitioned to a new blockchain system, Polygon, which has mitigated the problem.

In the wake of the FTX collapse the NFT world has been shaken up, and new competitors have arisen to take advantage of the disruption. One such rival, Blur, has recently overtaken OpenSea's market lead. This has led to OpenSea changing its policies and fee structures to be more favourable to creators in a bid to retake its crown. It remains to be seen whether Blur and other rivals will be able to keep up the pressure, but it's clear that OpenSea will need to innovate if it wants to remain at the head of the market.
