  • Proven ability to apply scientific methods to solve real-world problems on web-scale data

What the job involves

  • We are seeking a Staff Data Scientist for Pinterest’s Infrastructure Data Science and Engineering (IDSE) team
  • In order to deliver our product experiences to Pinners around the world, Pinterest invests heavily in our infrastructure systems (i.e. storing Pins, training ranking models, serving ad impressions, etc.) - and as a result, it’s a topline company priority for us to manage our infrastructure spend and usage efficiently
  • The IDSE team provides actionable insights on Pinterest’s infrastructure data - which enables us to reduce our costs, become more efficient, lower our carbon footprint, and grow sustainably as a company
  • Quantify: what does winning look like? How do we think about balancing infrastructure spend and business/product growth?
  • Measure: are we on track? What dashboards, forecast models, analyses do we need to understand: are we on track to hit our infrastructure goals? Why or why not?
  • Analyze: how do we win? What analyses can we perform to uncover opportunities to improve our strategy?
  • Lead and up-level the team. As the most senior data scientist on the team, you will help define the strategic roadmap and priorities for the team, guide the team in execution, and up-level the data rigor and culture of the organization
  • Collaborate closely with partners in Engineering, Finance, and Technical Program Management (TPM) teams across the company

Our take

Inspiration and ideas can pop into your head at any time, and with the growth of social media and networking, sharing these interests and gaining exposure has never been easier. Pinterest exists to display these moments visually, as a kind of digital pinboard allowing users to save and share digital images which have inspired them.

Pinterest's emphasis on visual discovery has differentiated it from competitors and created a more positive and fulfilling experience for its users. Pinterest in many ways provides a respite from the ceaseless negativity that plagues social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and this is perhaps responsible for its userbase expanding to 450 million users in 2022, driven by uptake mostly outside of North America.

Pinterest has not been immune to woes affecting the global tech sector and made about 5% of its workforce redundant at the end of 2022 and the start of 2023. Having restructured to face a challenging climate, it is well-positioned to resume its growth, which has increased consistently year on year. Its immediate goals are to continue to grow its user base and expand the uptake of its short video product, which it aims to monetize.
