What the job involves
- As a Senior Software Engineer, you would will be part of a 110+ people Tech organisation. Each engineer is part of a squad focussing on a part of the product, reporting to a Team Lead or an Engineering Manager
- Each squad is made with all the skills needed to build features end to end in autonomy, you will be working daily with a product manager, a designer and software engineers
- As a Senior Software Engineer you will take part of the discovery phase of the projects with the Product Manager and Designer to define the feature to build; then you will participate with other engineers to design the software architecture, build it, test it and release it to production
- The squad is also working on supporting customers using the features built by monitoring and fixing issues in production
- Within one month:
- You will learn everything about our company, our teams, and our vision during the first onboarding week
- You will follow a tech onboarding training to get familiar with the application, the accounting concepts, the code stack (we use Ruby 3 on Rails 7, AWS, React) and the CI/CD and have full autonomy with it
- You are integrated in your squad and explained your squad scope, roles and responsibilities
- You will have a “tech buddy”, another engineer, helping you on a daily basis with all the technical details you need to know at Pennylane
- You will start working on what we call “good first issues” to get familiar with the dev environment, the code structure, the tools and the squad scopes
- Within 3-6 months:
- You'll provide your expertise to deliver significant code changes
- You'll have full autonomy in leading (possibly cross-teams) design and architecture initiatives
- You'll be communicating progress, results, blockers with the right stakeholders, including for larger projects
- You'll be performing data investigations and root cause analysis across multiple tools if needed
- You'll drive some initiatives around Pennylane's public content or events (blog posts, meet-ups)
- Thanks to your unique personality you will provide supports to your team to continuously learn and improve
- And beyond:
- The teams are growing, there are plenty of opportunity to grow and develop your skills as a software engineer
- You will be able to take ownership and gain responsibilities on some features or projects the squad is responsible for
- You will have the possibility to have impact at Pennylane scale by working on cross teams or transversal initiatives
- You will participate in scaling the Pennylane application from 30k+ customers to millions customers

In multiple mature markets, companies have been using QuickBooks, Xero and other SaaS solutions for accounting, but it is a fragmented industry with each country using its own software solution. In France, there is no definitive SaaS solution for accounting.
Pennylane wants to overhaul current tools and modernise the tech stack of accounting firms, by connecting directly with third-party services that hold valuable information. Accounting firms can use Pennylane collaboratively by accessing the platform to centralise receipts, create invoices and automate tasks. Instead of sending information back and forth with spreadsheets and photo attachments, both clients and accounting firms can interact directly on the platform.
Pennylane has a significant market opportunity ahead, with an ambitious goal to become the preferred management platform for European companies. The company already claims 50,000 customers. A recent instalment of funding will allow the company to further develop its platform, looking at artificial intelligence for accountants, and expand to other markets in Europe.
