Company mission

To democratize access to opportunity and ensure any student can build a great career no matter who they know, where they live or what school they attend.

Role

Who you are

  • Customer focused. You understand the needs of your customer intimately and represent them everywhere, grounding your approach in data and research
  • Marketplace savvy. You understand different user types and can reason about incentives in a marketplace to create successful products
  • Strong analytical thinker. Can connect the dots, spot challenges and edge cases, integrate multiple considerations
  • Experience launching and managing a consumer social product with 1M+ active users
  • Comfortable using data for tactical and strategic decisioning, goal setting, and iterating quickly

Desirable

  • PM experience leading the development and launch of net new, “zero to one” consumer products
  • Experience managing a consumer product with significant scale (i.e. 10MM+ users)

What the job involves

  • Handshake is hiring a Product Manager to help us deliver a world class consumer experience
  • More than half of college students in the US have a profile on Handshake but they’re using the platform primarily as a transactional job board
  • In order to fully realize our mission and goals, we need to better engage students through content and community — and in this role, you will be critical to ensuring this
  • Ultimately, we believe Handshake can give every student access to the career-defining power of a supportive community and we need your help to make that happen!
  • You’ll be part of a close-knit cross-functional team including not just R&D but also demand generation, marketing operations, product marketing, sales, customer success and insights - together building a truly game-changing SaaS platform
  • At the same time, you’ll be mindful about making positive societal impact, including improving diversity, equity and inclusion in entry level recruiting
  • Product Strategy. You’ll ensure that your squad has a cohesive product strategy that ladders up into the Content & Community team and company strategy
  • Leadership. You’ll work with your team leads to represent your product area to executives, and translate company-wide strategies to your squad and into your roadmap
  • Goal Setting. You’ll help hold your squad accountable to clear goals that ensure they are tracking effectively towards the strategy
  • Planning and Execution. You’ll help your team and stakeholders prioritize and collaborate on the roadmap while ensuring we have appropriate alignment with stakeholders
  • Collaboration. You’ll work closely with other key leaders in the Content & Community team (i.e. design, marketing, engineering, data) as well as leaders in other lines of businesses (E.g. Career Events, Paid Employer offerings) to ensure cohesive strategy and execution

Our take

The three founders of Handshake established their company in an attempt to eliminate inequality and make the student hiring landscape fairer. The Handshake platform acts as a LinkedIn for college students, pairing students from every walk of life with more than 650K employers, including the entire Fortune 500, which includes Google and Nike.

The graduate recruitment platform is open to any student with a valid @.edu email address, with more than 12 million active users from thousands of colleges and universities. With a student-first philosophy, the company generates revenue from both universities and employers rather than students.

Valued at $3.5B, Handshake has gained traction in a competitive market, although it has strong competition from recruiting giants LinkedIn and Indeed. It stands out, however, by helping students build new relationships and skills, rather than simply making connections to people they already know.
