Our take
Minimal access surgery holds great benefits for both surgeons and patients, but there is only so much that surgeons can achieve with just a steady hand. Robotic technology shows a great track record for augmenting the capabilities of surgeons, but existing minimal access solutions are highly specialist and therefore only useful in very specific scenarios.
CMR Surgical develops a robotic system for minimal access surgery called Versius, designed to be highly versatile to tackle a wide range of complex procedures with precision. The robotic system leverages a digital interface to facilitate real-time data-driven insights within the operating room, along with a user interface to facilitate real-time robotic changes.
Whilst CMR Surgical will face challenges from other surgery robotic systems, the company stands out with its approach to robotic versatility and real-time data analytics, in addition to finding a niche in minimal access surgery. Through its focus on flexibility, the company aims to increase access to surgical robotics whilst ensuring that only one robot system is required for all minimal access surgical procedures.
