Company mission

To make it simpler and safer for people to move things and themselves around.

Role

Who you are

  • Technical lead of a significant backend effort, ideally with several moving parts
  • Strong ability to work with other teams, including non-engineering teams. You should be able to negotiate technical solutions that match product needs and timelines
  • Working across many different parts of a complex stack, not just focusing on a single piece of software
  • If you’re a software engineer or researcher who’s curious and passionate about Level 4 autonomous driving, we'd like to meet you

Desirable

  • An ideal candidate is seen as a “fixer” in their prior roles, someone whom leadership tapped to drop into projects and turn them around or clarify focus
  • Ability to dive into a complex backend system and make sense of it, including live debugging and learning the codebase
  • C++ and distributed systems experience
  • Experience working at another transportation company or similar consumer-oriented experience

What the job involves

  • Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology
  • Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations
  • We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers
  • You will take on technical leadership for part of Waymo One’s backend systems. The exact team will depend on your interests and qualifications, but we have teams working on systems such as vehicle scheduling, dynamic pricing, partner APIs, and experimentation
  • You will build a solid long-term technical foundation while also fielding the near-term needs of Waymo One. Our service is still early, and we need an adaptable leader who can reprioritize on the fly
  • This is primarily a technical role and does not require people management, though we could consider that if the candidate is interested

Otta's take

Xav Kearney

CTO of Otta

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google self-driving car project in 2009. After initial development, it secured permits to deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix and San Francisco, but has recently hit a major bump in the road with safety concerns that resulted in a recall of over 400 self-driving cars.

With the autonomous driving industry already besieged by setbacks and public distrust, this development does Waymo no favours. That said, as an industry leader there remains the possibility it will see out the storm, but massive attention will need to be given to rebuilding trust with consumers if this is to be the case.
