Company mission

To build the future of safe payments.

Role

Who you are

  • Most importantly, a person who obsesses over the small details for customers but knows when to ship quickly for internal iteration
  • Someone who is supremely comfortable doing the “nitty gritty” on the whole spectrum from quick-and-dirty wireframing to high fidelity mock-ups
  • Someone as comfortable with strategic thinking as with detailed designs who can collaborate with customers, engineers, PMs, and the founders
  • Someone who wants to shape brand identity (bc, well, we don’t have one) in your free time
  • And, last but not least, a structured doer who can create order out of nothing and finds that exciting

Desirable

  • Industry expertise: we’re building on top of technical payments infrastructure, so ideally you’ve worked in fintech or banking. You will also need to mock up outputs for bank employees, so a facility with concepts like open banking would be helpful
  • Years of experience: 5 or more. We’re looking for professionals who can structure their own work, think strategically, and yet are willing to get their hands dirty. But we’re not overly strict on this one
  • A beautiful portfolio: we’d love to see your work designing user flows, working on both mobile and desktop apps, mocking up dashboards, with ideally an emphasis on simplicity
  • Tools of the trade: Duh, you use Figma (or your tool of choice) in your sleep. Ideally you also have some familiarity with front-end languages and frameworks like HTML, CSS, JavaScript

What the job involves

  • Propose user & information flows based on research of, e.g., open banking, social authentication, telephony data, etc, across a range of experiences (e.g., online vs. branch origination, happy vs. non-happy paths)
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and visual designs for web and mobile applications
  • Mock up data visualization - e.g., if an API returns a JSON of fields, how should it be displayed in a visually compelling dashboard for bank personnel?
  • Design company visual assets, including website branding, design language for sales & marketing collateral, etc
  • Stay up-to-date with industry best practices & technology, including finding ways to be efficient with genAI tooling

Application process

  • We are seeking to make our interview as experiential as possible in order for both sides to get the most signal on what it would be like to work together. And our Tunic-set SLA is to respond to you within 2 business days of every stage. So, the steps are:
  • 1. Initial application (<2 mins): Submit your LinkedIn (or CV) & portfolio (we don’t believe in cover letters or unnecessary work here!) 👇
  • 2. Mutual screening call (45mins): A call or coffee ☕ with one of the co-founders. This is as much for you as it is for us!
  • 3. Portfolio Review (60 mins): A deep dive into a specific project or two from your portfolio. Show us your best work!
  • 4. Product design case study (1 week to prepare, 60 mins discussion): We’ll give you a prompt so you can highlight your skillset.
  • 5. Follow-on assessments (total 3 hours, spread over several meetings): To get more data on each other, we’ll set you up with: Some investors & advisors (~3-4 conversations, 30-45 mins each), More time with us (60 mins whiteboard, another visioning conversation with the founders)
  • 6. References and offer: Ideally over dinner!

Company

Our take

Scams are a major problem in the UK, with residents losing huge amounts of money to fraudsters every year. Tunic wants to help combat this problem, by rearchitecting payments infrastructure so that both financial institutes and consumers have control over every transaction.

This is an admittedly ambitious undertaking, but one that represents a vast opportunity given the right approach. Since emerging from stealth, Tunic has been actively developing its platform to combat Authorized Push Payment (APP) fraud. It collaborates with major UK banks and fintechs to offer Payment Intelligence solutions that provide typology-speciifty data fields and adaptive insights throughout the payment journey.

The company seems to be off to a great start and in February 2025, it was even selected to participate in NatWest's inaugural Fintech growth Programmes, a move that shows the company is being recognised for its potential to enhance customer safety in the digital age.
