Who you are

  • 3-4 years of experience in trust, safety, compliance, fraud prevention, or a related field
  • Experience managing a team
  • Strong understanding of the online marketplace landscape and the unique safety challenges it presents
  • A curious and creative mind, open to not just finding challenges, but coming up with ways to solve them
  • Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures
  • Experience with modelling and forecasting a bonus, but not essential
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

What the job involves

  • We are looking for a Marketplace Trust Manager to join our team and help us make Motorway the safest and most trusted online marketplace for used cars
  • In this role, you will be responsible for leading a team of analysts
  • You will be given a high-degree of autonomy in defining and implementing overall strategy on marketplace trust
  • You will report into the Head of Legal & Risk
  • You will also work closely with our product, engineering, and senior leadership to develop and implement policies, procedures, and product developments that keep our platform a safe and sustainable place to do business
  • Be prepared to hit the ground running and make recommendations for change
  • Build, lead, mentor, and develop a team of Marketplace Trust Analysts. Provide guidance, training, and ongoing support to ensure the team is well-equipped to handle challenges effectively
  • Act as a key advisor to senior leadership and exec team, securing buy-in for strategic initiatives that improve platform trust and user safety
  • Develop and implement strategic policies and frameworks to proactively prevent fraud, scams, and safety risks, ensuring a secure and trusted platform
  • Lead critical investigations into marketplace integrity incidents, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure swift and effective resolution
  • Monitor and analyse key metrics to identify areas for improvement in our product and develop action plans to enhance user confidence in our marketplace
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to develop and implement trust & safety features
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends and best practices in trust and safety

Our take

Like many industries, the second-hand car market has undergone significant transformation, with more and more dealers and car owners looking to buy and sell cars online. Motorway is one of a handful of online car marketplaces that are capitalising on this trend.

Motorway differentiates itself from traditional e-commerce and brick and mortar stores because it’s a marketplace, rather than an inventory. This allows for improved speed and verification. Owners sell their cars 100% online in as little as 24 hours with free car collection, while Motorway also supports car dealerships with a new channel for acquisition of used car stock.

Since being founded in 2017, Motorway has grown rapidly, achieving unicorn status in 2021. It is planning on putting this capital to use expanding both geographically and internally, adding more features to its already well-reviewed product. One such feature is its ULEZ checker, which allows car buyers to assess the environmental compliance of vehicles.

The biggest challenge Motorway faces is competing with other well-funded competitors jumping on this trend, such as Auto1 and Cazoo, as well as established companies like Webuyanycar.com. However, online penetration in the £480 billion British and EU used car market is minimal - suggesting that there is enough market to share amongst Motorway and its competitors.
