  • System-thinking–you tackle systems-level problems and treat technical constraints as creative opportunities
  • A love of iterative software delivery–you thrive on feedback
  • Humility–you’re always learning!
  • 10+ years of enterprise design experience preferably in software as a service environment
  • A design portfolio demonstrating a deep appreciation for enterprise experience made simple, sleek, and usable. (Please share Password)

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with Senior Product managers and Engineering leaders to influence product direction
  • BA/BS degree in Design (e.g. interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial, etc), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science (CS) or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Open to 50% flex-hybrid reporting to our Boulder office

What the job involves

  • You will work with a team that is growing our Design System to deliver intuitive, attractive experiences by default in the Platform and creating modern patterns that scale to every surface
  • You will be working on a team that is building a world class Design System, delivering system documentation which delivers a clear Workday point-of-view for all design decisions across Workdays Platforms and Products
  • Design hands-on to evolve the future of the Workday design system and platform
  • Own design for multiple areas of the platform
  • Discern patterns by looking at a handful of use cases, then pressure test and refine them for broad applicability across the product suite
  • Align with key partners in Platform, Engineering, and Product and drive pattern development from a strong UX point of view
  • Define prioritization for high impact patterns, component redesigns, and cross-cutting features of our design system
  • Influence and drive entire workstreams, providing design system direction
  • Establish guidelines, driven by a system POV, e.g. when and how we should diverge from established patterns, or how patterns are applied for our myriad of user types
  • Deliver pattern documentation
  • Provide regular design feedback to Platform designers and engineers on implementing the design system, and Product Designer and Engineers on contributing to and using the system
  • Connect related projects across the company to resolve issues or joint decisions quickly

Our take

Workday is a cloud-based software vendor that provides management of workforces and finances. The company uses a single database for workforce management and financial management to offer integration and optimize business intelligence across companies. It has added to the packages and tools it offers over the years, providing analytic options that allow companies to combine third-party data with information collected by Workday.

Workday has acquired and paired up with many other companies to keep expanding its offering. In 2021, it purchased the employee feedback platform Peakon in response to the growing need for managers to be able to survey workers and collect satisfaction data without face-to-face meetings. The company has also bought and developed many financial tools and HR management tools.

The company’s goal is to provide end-to-end back office services and while there are other providers, such as UKG Pro and Ceridian HCM, Workday’s broad offering helps them to stand out. Though it faced a tough global market in 2023 and has shed some of its headcount, Workday has seen a 6.5% gain in value in the first quarter of 2024. It is now focusing on growth and developing the AI capabilities of its platform. .
