Who you are

  • We’re open-minded to background (no degree required). So long as the core skills for the role can be demonstrated, we care about what you can do, not what you have done. We have a broad range of different backgrounds already in our team and believe a diverse team is the best team. So whether you're a Bootcamper, self taught programmer, or CompSci graduate, we'd love to hear from you.
  • You have 1-4 years of experience programming in a production environment.
  • You’re comfortable using multiple programming languages and learning new things on the fly. We don't expect any Elixir experience. We'd love if you had a mixture of front and back end experience but your willingness to learn is much more important to us!

What the job involves

  • You'll join a growing engineering team of 10+ full-stack engineers and work closely with our CTO (Xav), engineering manager (Billy), and technical lead (Joe). You'll collaborate with product managers and product designers, to translate ideas into impact as fast as possible
  • Build features from start to finish, and deploy on a daily basis. We use GitHub and continuously deploy to a Kubernetes cluster hosted on Google Cloud Platform
  • Own code across our stack, from backend services in Elixir (with GraphQL + Postgres) to front-end single-page apps in React/TypeScript
  • Develop step-change experiences from scratch which immediately impact 300,000+ candidates and 5000+ companies
  • Get stuck in and bring your ideas to life to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives and careers
  • Hybrid working - We have a hybrid approach to working that we believe helps us deliver the best quality products to our candidates. We ask that you come to our central London office around 1-2 days a week, but we're flexible around you working away for a month if you need to as well. If you're more comfortable in the office than at home, many of our team also do 5 days a week!

Application process

  • 1. Initial chat to learn more about Otta, and more about what you're looking for next (30 mins)
  • 2. Take-home technical task (1 hour) - Here we look to evaluate key skills for the role. We ask you to only spend 1 hour, it isn't timed and you can complete in your own time and in any language you choose.
  • 3. Technical discussion (30 mins) - This is with our CTO (Xav), where we'll dive into a hypothetical problem and how you'd go about solving it.
  • 4. Pair programming (1 hour) - This is with our Engineering Manager (Billy), and Tech Lead (Joe), where we'll work through a real world ticket here at Otta and look to see how you go about problem solving.
  • 5. Final interview with Theo or Sam (Co-founders), where they’ll ask you questions around what you might bring to the role, and how you might embody our values at Otta (45 minutes)
  • We expect the process to take 2-3 weeks from start to finish, but we can move faster if you need us to
