Role
Who you are
- Minimum of 5+ years of professional software development experience
- Undergrad or Masters in Computer Science, Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineering and/or related technical fields
- Demonstrated technical leadership experience
- Strong technical experience with C, C++ or Rust as well as working experience with a scripting language
- Systems programming, high-level network programming, and system-level optimization experience
- Experience working with or designing multiple different kinds of software integration frameworks and communication paradigms
Desirable
- Experience in self-driving, automotive or robotics fields
- Low-level Linux and networking knowledge
- Experience with sensor integration such as LiDAR, camera or radar and related concepts such as time synchronization
- Open-minded and collaborative team player with the willingness to help others
- Passionate about self-driving technologies, solving hard problems, and creating innovative solutions
What the job involves
- Be part of a team of multidisciplinary Engineers and Research Scientists using an AI-first approach to enable safe self-driving at scale
- Participate in roadmap planning, system design, development, and testing of our high-level software stack for self-driving trucks
- Implement and maintain high-level software abstractions used to integrate our autonomy system in real-time on our trucks and in our deterministic simulator
- Partner with autonomy software development teams to help them integrate new features
- Identify integration patterns that would benefit from new design patterns or framework abstractions. Integrate sensors and optimize data pre-processing latency
- Build or integrate performance measurement tools, data recording, and data visualization tools
- Develop software according to industry-best practices for safe, reliable and robust code
Our take
Autonomous vehicle technology is rapidly developing and many sectors are recognising its value. However, whilst the self-driving industry has made significant advancements there is much more that can be done. There are challenges in this space surrounding scale and developing commercially viable self-driving technology.
Waabi hopes to tackle these challenges and be the leader in self-driving technology with their "AI first approach". The company said that combined with a closed-loop simulator, this approach will allow both common driving scenarios and safety-critical edge cases to be tested at scale - solving one of the key issues in the industry.
Waabi successfully raised one of the largest Series A rounds ever raised in Canada, and has gone on to raise fresh Volvo and Uber-led funding in early 2024. While the company's focus is currently on autonomous long-haul trucking (launching its first generation of trucks in November 2022), the company is well set to lead the next generation of self-driving technology.
