While sports broadcast media rights are worth $50 billion globally, Sport Buff points out that even though viewers are heavily engaged, much of their actual discourse, digital interaction, and crucially, spending, happens away from a broadcaster’s platform, on social media channels, chat groups, and betting apps.
In a bid to increase engagement, as well as monetization opportunities for broadcasters, Sports Buff allows them to insert interactive graphics such as game stats, polls, predictions, and quizzes into live streams.
Launched in 2019 by major sports media veteran Jonty Whitehead and serial sports tech entrepreneur Benn Achilleas, the company is growing impressively, already working with a number of major broadcasters including Major League Soccer (MLS), DAZN, and Fox Sports Australia, while its investors also include the owners of English Premier League Clubs Brentford and Southampton.
