Otta's take

It’s common knowledge that mental health has become a lot less of a taboo topic in the last decade. The opportunities and support networks where people can speak out and share their experiences have risen. This newer culture wave is having a big impact on younger generations, giving them the space to talk about issues they face at school and university. More than two thirds of children reported at least 1 traumatic event by age 16. This highlights the importance of normalising talking to someone from an early age.

Tellmi is a mental health app predominantly for young people aged 11-25, the one game-changer…it’s completely anonymous. This could spark a fear in using the app also as anything could be shared, however Tellmi has a team of moderators assessing all of the content that appears on the app. The app also has counsellors on-hand to directly communicate with. The community aspect to the app is something that also separates Tellmi from other companies like this. Giving people the ability to talk freely and support each other without the need of a counsellor or therapist third party is an amazing feature that could have quite a large impact beyond the app.

Co-founder Suzie Godson is a psychologist having shown an interest in peer support in their career, meeting Co-founder Kerstyn Comely, an education technologist, was the catalyst to pursuing this idea. Tellmi (formerly MeeToo) has won several awards and is now a part of the NHS app library. A new wave of funding has just come through so it’ll be exciting to see what this already brilliant app can go on to do to support the mental health stigma and those suffering.
