Who you are

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required
  • You should have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in inventory accounting. Experience in a manufacturing or retail environment is preferred. Costing accounting experience is desired.You also have experience with general accounting and ERP systems in a month-end-close environment
  • Proficiency in inventory accounting principles and methods is vital. You should be well-versed in using inventory management software and have strong Excel skills
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data, conduct variance analysis, and make data-driven decisions
  • Precision and a keen eye for detail are necessary to maintain accurate financial records
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present financial data effectively
  • A proactive problem-solving attitude to address discrepancies and improve processes
  • Familiarity with accounting standards and regulatory compliance related to inventory accounting
  • The ability to adapt to changing business needs and a dynamic work environment

What the job involves

  • As a Senior Accountant, you will play a crucial role in analyzing and recording transactions related to inventory, fulfillment and operations
  • You will be responsible for overseeing the financial aspects of inventory and fulfillment, participating in the month end close process, providing reporting for various departments, and reviewing the balance sheet/P&L and providing commentary
  • Oversight of inventory at multiple locations ensuring accurate and timely valuation and completion of transactional activities
  • Perform month-end inventory reconciliations to the warehouse management system reports and create necessary journal entries
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of costing methods that promote efficiency and effectiveness of the costing of inventory and cost of sales, as well as internal control structure, processes and monitoring
  • Analyze aging reports and review turnover of inventory/in-process materials for possible impairment and calculate any necessary reserves
  • Review and accurate recording of supply chain and warehouse expenses
  • Review operational expenses such as freight, material cost, labor, and supplies and ensure proper accounting
  • Freight expenses review and recording of accruals. Provide details on freight trends
  • Analyze inventory in-transit transactions and investigate delays to ensure timely recording of transactions
  • Assist with internal and external inventory audits as they pertain to inventory and fulfillment expenses
  • Record/reconcile transactions for Babylist Health
  • Provide inventory reporting to cross functional departments
  • Balance Sheet and P&L flux analysis for inventory/fulfillment/COGS/Babylist Health accounts
  • Responsible for P&L review of specific departments
  • Assist in various project and work effectively with cross functional business partners, including Finance, Merchandising & Inventory Management, Supply Chain, FP&A, Accounts Payable, Engineering, Product, IT and other teams
  • Financial Stewardship: Your meticulous approach to inventory management will directly impact the company's financial health
  • Strategic Decision Support: Your inventory reports and analysis will serve as a critical resource for strategic decision-making
  • Compliance and Auditing: Your commitment to maintaining compliant and accurate inventory records will ensure a smooth auditing process
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Your collaboration with various departments, such as procurement and supply chain, will foster better communication and alignment within the organization
  • Risk Mitigation: Your approach to variance analysis and discrepancy resolution will help the company identify and address potential risks in a timely manner

Our take

Since its 2011 launch, Babylist has grown into one of the most highly rated baby registries in the US. The difference it offers is that it allows users to include products from any store in their registries. On top of this, the company’s model also focuses heavily on creating informational content, which allows it to generate ad revenue while building customer loyalty.

Originally scaled with fairly low venture funding, Babylist claims half of new parents in the US now use its services. This, given that the baby products industry is worth close to $90 billion, shows the immense growth of the company as well as speaking to the impact it has made in the space.

Babylist has seen strong funding in the past which fuelled projects such as the launch of virtual showrooms, and facilitated the company's expansion further into the market. The company acquired Expectful, a health and wellness tool, in 2023 with the long-term vision to combine the companies into a larger health and wellness media property, that can help people navigate all parts of parenthood from fertility to diapers.
