Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience in training and deploying ML models, developing ML software, and shipping customer-facing ML products
- Deep understanding of modern ML techniques (e.g. Large Language Models) and the ML lifecycle from data gathering, training, model evaluation, MLOps, and productionizing models
- A desire to understand our clients’ needs in order to design tools and systems that solve our customer's problems. As a platform team, our main customers are internal developers and products
- Passion for improving your productivity as a developer and intuiting the ideal developer experience
- Ability to produce production-quality code and services incorporating testing, evaluation, monitoring, and exquisite documentation, as well as the ability to quickly adapt to a new domain, hack MVP’s, and iterate to improve product
- Experience using any of the major cloud vendors for high scale production use cases
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with technical and non-technical stakeholders
What the job involves
- All of Block's product services are organized into business units with their own product and engineering teams. Underneath, there's a connected platform team that supports the company. We are that platform
- Within the platform, our team’s focus is on using AI to accelerate productivity across the company, automating routine tasks like knowledge retrieval and code migrations
- Our team works cross-functionally across Block’s business units to deliver the most impactful tools to developers, and oftentimes working closely with teams to understand specific needs, and then generalizing those across Block
- We're looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Machine Learning Engineer that will help us leverage AI to build impactful tools for across Block, with a focus on engineering velocity
- You'll bring together content from across Blocks business units and strategically build a foundational platform layer that will power AI applications
- This unique opportunity will require you to build and maintain relationships with teams throughout Block and external vendors to collaborate on delivering highly visible and leveraged tools, as well as keep up with evolving AI technology
- You’ll provide guidance to teams on what is possible with AI and help drive their AI product direction, in addition to collaboratively building those applications
- Develop a scalable AI platform to host internal and external facing use cases
- Improve internal productivity and engineering velocity by designing novel AI solutions to automate complex processes
- Define the future of AI at Block as a part of a newly formed company-wide initiative
- Collaborate across diverse teams to develop AI solutions by understanding and generalizing the problems of cross-functional stakeholders
- Lead AI innovation by building and open sourcing advanced frameworks and tools to enhance internal workflows and set industry standards
- Drive alignment with Block’s AI strategy by acting as a company AI expert and educating other teams about how to apply cutting-edge AI to their domains
Our take
Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.
The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.
Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
