Role

Who you are

  • Experience with AWS solutions such as EC2, DynamoDB, S3, and Redshift
  • Knowledge of SQL and data warehousing concepts
  • Experience with data visualization using Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools

Desirable

  • Experience in data mining, ETL, etc. and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets
  • Experience using SQL to pull data from a database or data warehouse and scripting experience (Python) to process data for modeling
  • Experience with forecasting and statistical analysis

What the job involves

  • As a Business Intelligence / Data Engineer you will enable data-driven decision making within the Amazon Web Services Data Center Infrastructure Operations organization
  • The Infrastructure Operations Team is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring and continuously improving the global Amazon Data Center infrastructure
  • The team supports all aspects of the Data Center based organizations, including but not limited to: Safety, Security, maintenance, daily operations, logistics, engineering and equipment management
  • You will be developing, implementing and maintaining the information data warehouse, and utilizing insight platforms, to enable decision support systems for the overall organization
  • You should have excellent business and communication skills, and be able to work with business owners to understand their data and reporting requirements
  • Above all, you should be passionate about working with huge data sets and be someone who is able to bring data sets together to answer business questions and drive growth
  • You will build ETLs to ingest the data into the data warehouse and data lake, as well as end-user facing reporting applications
  • You will primarily support teams within the Infrastructure environment, but will also have opportunities to support teams in the overall Amazon Web Services community
  • You will work with business customers and development teams to define analytics requirements and then deliver flexible, scalable, end-to-end solutions
  • You will have an opportunity to work with big data and emerging technologies while driving business intelligence solutions end-to-end: business requirements, data modeling, ETL, metadata, reporting, and dashboarding
  • You should have expertise in the design, creation, management, and business use of large datasets
  • WS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure
  • In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running
  • We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on
  • We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help
  • You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles
  • You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers
  • And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion
  • Passion for storytelling through the visualization of data. We are looking for someone who obsesses about the user experience and who excels in driving business outcomes through the dashboards they develop
  • Experience with Tableau or similar visualization/dashboarding platforms like PowerBI, QlikView, Google Charts, Amazon QuickSight, etc
  • Moderate to Advanced SQL skills. Skill with aggregate functions, joins between three or more data sources, window functions, and query optimization
  • Experience in building presentation layers for reporting dashboards in SQL
  • Ability to design and build tables for staging and presentation, outside of the visualization software, in AWS Redshift or other similar Data Warehouse (DW) platform
  • Knowledge and understanding of data modeling and data design, e.g. fact and dimension tables, snowflake and star schema, etc
  • Experience in building automation to extract data from a Data Lake/Data Warehouse into visualizations
  • Optimizing large volumes of data through organization of building views and tables with business metrics and KPIs, and creating scheduled, recurring jobs to load data into the visualization environment
  • Experience leading projects, interacting with customers and stakeholders to deliver successful dashboard products

Our take

Amazon is the world's largest online retailer, and is well-known for its disruption of well-established industries. The company is present in numerous verticals, including cloud computing with Amazon Web Services, AI with its range of Alexa devices and a global marketplace more commonly referred to as 'the everything store'. Acquisitions include Ring, Twitch, Whole Foods Market, and IMDb.

More recently, Amazon has been focused on leading the "third wave in digital advertising". Many businesses are now shifting ad dollars to retailers, which before would have been spent with online media platforms. Amazon's seen great success in the space, with its revenue from advertising now higher than its Amazon Prime membership scheme, audiobooks and digital music combined. This growth is particularly impressive considering its digital ad rivals (like Snap, Alphabet, and Meta) have suffered declines due to wider macroeconomic factors and Apple's iOS privacy changes.

Despite its dominant market position, Amazon will continue to be challenged over the next decade, including sustaining AWS's cloud dominance in the face of Google and Microsoft. On top of this, the company's e-commerce division is facing profitability problems despite its 2023 post-IPO debt funding of 8 billion. It will need to find new ways to stay above their competitors.
