Company mission

To save engineering time and increases trust by letting data teams know when things break, what went wrong, and how to fix it — before an executive messages them about a broken dashboard.

Role

Who you are

  • Data landscape knowledge: To assist our customers in going deeper with the platform, it’s essential that you understand how data engineers, analytics engineers, and others in the data space operate
  • Familiarity with technical products and the ability to understand and articulate complex concepts will be key
  • Presentation skills: You’ll be meeting regularly with customers and should be comfortable leading compelling presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Curiosity: The data space is changing constantly and our customers with it. You should have a proactive attitude towards learning and staying abreast of the latest industry trends and learning more through experimentation
  • Customer-centric thinking: Our customers’ success and their happiness with the platform are the core of this role
  • Collaborative: In this role you will collaborate heavily with both our customers and with internal teams, in particular Product, Sales, and Marketing. Your ability to identify and articulate opportunities to others will make you successful

Desirable

  • You have a track record of success in managing and growing a set of accounts
  • You have worked in the modern data stack (Snowflake, dbt, etc.)
  • You’re comfortable reading and writing complex SQL queries

What the job involves

  • As the Lead Technical Account Manager, you will own the ongoing relationship with our customers
  • After their onboarding is complete, you will work with them to discover new pain points and needs and help them use Metaplane to solve them
  • This role calls for someone with empathy with customers, strong organizational skills, and the technical acumen to dig in deep on their challenges
  • Your work to deepen our customers’ usage of the platform will be instrumental to the company’s success as you grow accounts, develop advocates and evangelists, and represent the voice of the customer back to the product team for incorporation into the product roadmap
  • Metaplane is a small, tight-knit, high-performing team, and the perfect candidate will be ready to get their hands dirty on day one while building up a scalable practice to support the company as it grows
  • Manage customers: Check in regularly with Metaplane’s customers and find ways to make them continuously more successful in their data quality efforts
  • Drive growth: Help customers deepen their use of the platform by expanding monitor coverage, introducing more advanced features and use cases, and driving adoption of innovative new features
  • Build for scale: Develop best practices for managing customers at scale, defining the appropriate cadence and style of check in to foster a strong relationship
  • Support the rest of the business: Provide the Product team with customer perspectives on the roadmap, and collaborate with the Sales teams to identify the newest, most valuable use cases for Metaplane, and bring customer case studies and advocates to the Marketing team

Our take

The amount of data the companies process - and the number of tools available to handle it - has increased exponentially in recent years. While platforms exist to monitor the performance of data software, not much exists to monitor the data itself, leading to data used in business critical applications sometimes becoming unreliable and requiring time-consuming and expensive QA.

Metaplane positions itself as a "DataDog for data", targeting quality issues by using anomaly detection models to find issues in a customer's data stack in real time, including the data warehouses which the data comes from. This allows data teams to swiftly locate and triage issues, before erroneous data hits a dashboard. While there is a growing roster of competitors entering the observability space, including Cribl, Monte Carlo and Manta, Metaplane seeks to stand out with its focus on product data, where its proprietary algorithms outshine Meta's Prophet library used by most competitors.

Metaplane has amassed a solid customer base of over 140 companies including Imperfect Foods, Appcues and Reforge. It closed a Series A funding round in 2024 off of its successes so far. This investment is going towards the development of its AI-powered observability platform. In the longer term, it will move into other business areas beyond product. As companies continue to grapple with the reliability of their data, Metaplane is well-placed to build a significant business in this sector.
