What the job involves

  • As a Product Manager at Cloudflare, you are responsible for building products that improve the way that the Internet works
  • Product Managers at Cloudflare sit at the intersection of software development, design, and business strategy
  • On an average day, you might pitch a concept to senior leadership, create a launch plan with marketing, work with designers to conduct user research, prototype a new feature, iterate on a spec, analyze usage data, or pair with an engineer on implementation
  • As the Senior Director of Product for Threat Intelligence, you will be working with a wide range of cross functional teams supporting our largest customers to ensure we have both the tooling and the processes to detect and react to attacks
  • You will ultimately help define the strategy of our Threat Intelligence approach, managing a capable team of product managers and delivering great solutions to help Cloudflare move into the much broader security space
  • In this role you will shape the Security Forensics solutions offered by Cloudflare, working closely with the development team, support teams and other functions across Cloudflare, to listen to customer problems and deliver solutions that satisfy customers needs
  • You will solve problems that have wide impact and significance, shaping the future of security on the Internet
  • As this role is a management role, you will also be expected to hire and build a great team, and be able to report progress towards senior leadership and engage at an executive level across the company
  • Take leadership. You will manage a team of product managers ensuring coverage and accountability for the myriad projects across the organization
  • Work horizontally. Disparate groups like Engineering, Program Management, Finance, Revenue Operations, Business Intelligence and external vendors
  • Span timescales. Short term deliverables like supporting product launches, medium term ones like migrating customers to new and better systems and longer term ones like implementations of net new solutions not available today
  • Span domains. You need to simultaneously let other teams rely on the roadmaps you publish while being responsive to the interrupt-driven nature of the business. When shifts do occur, you need to proactively communicate with other teams to maintain trust
  • Communicate and collaborate. Essential to the success of this program is the ability to listen, learn, synthesize and communicate outwards as well as influence through persuasion
  • Represent Cloudflare. Many of our largest customers want to speak to us about their concerns and our plans in the billing domain. You will spend time learning from them
  • Provide and demand accountability. You are responsible for the delivery of your commitments and you will hold your peers and subordinates accountable for theirs
  • This is a self-directed role where you will be expected to own a product suite vision, direction

Our take

Cloudflare is a multi-service global network that provides web security and infrastructure, DDoS mitigation services, and a content delivery network. Founded in 2009, Cloudflare has risen to become an industry giant, with around 25 million global internet properties on its network.

Cloudflare has been responsible for a number of admirable initiatives, offering free web protection to human rights groups, journalists, artists, and US election websites. This goes some way to counteracting the flak Cloudflare has received in some circles for the controversial groups and users who use its services. This chequered history, however, has not affected its over 80% market share in the content delivery network field.

This is perhaps in part because it has proven sharp at staying abreast of the rapidly morphing tech and digital space and customer demands. For example, Cloudflare is shifting to 100% renewable energy usage to create a zero-emissions internet, and in 2020 released a feature that would help users navigate data privacy regulations by selecting where their data is stored.

The cloud infrastructure market reached $53 billion in 2022. While the Big 3 (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) own 65% of the market, that still leaves billions of dollars left for companies such as Cloudflare. Its ambitious and successful work is likely to continue being a crucial feature of the web, but in 2023, placed it in the crosshairs of hackers looking to exploit its infrastructure. The beginning of 2024 saw Cloudflare vow to bolster its security and patch vulnerabilities.
